Meet Vivian Howard from “A Chef’s Life”
Have you ever dreamed of selling everything and moving to a slower-paced town? I have to be honest, we have entertained that idea a couple times! It always gets back to what type of work would we do! I’d love to have a farm where we grow our own food – but let’s be realistic here, I don’t know if I am cut out for that. But one woman, Chef Vivian Howard surely is! I love her story and think you will too – along with the tasty okra recipe she shared with us! PBS’s A Chef’s Life, the character-driven docu-series that takes viewers inside the life and kitchen of Chef Vivian Howard and her two restaurants…

Planning Meals around Organic and Locally-Sourced Foods
This post is sponsored by Foster Farms®, the opinions expressed are my own. Lately we have been trying to add locally-grown vegetables to our recipes and I have been making the trip to our local farm a couple times a month to check out their fresh produce. I love that the strawberries are picked that day and the vegetables about every two days. I remember my surprise when the zucchini still had the prickly hairs on them. They offer a wide range of vegetables and fresh herbs that you can pick right there! I think that is my daughter’s favorite part of the trip. She’ll grab…

The Importance of Taking Care of Ourselves
Just about any mom can tell you that raising kids, well-adjusted and happy kids, is a full-time and exhausting job but one that has so many benefits. The hug at the end of the night telling you you’re the best mom in the whole world to little giggles about a shared joke to your heart basically exploding with love for your kid are all things that keep us going. We want to do our best and take care of our family’s needs but many times we do it at the expense of our own. Lately, I have been taking some extra time out to refuel and re-energize myself so that…

Butter Pecan Cake with Buttercream Maple (Pecan) Frosting
A crisp fall day. The smell of pumpkins and leaves in the air. And chilly. You can smell that too. Just enough to walk a little brisk or to throw on a scarf and where you pull your boots out. Whether Fall has just begun or it’s full in swing and you’re looking for a dessert for Thanksgiving or Christmas this Butter Pecan cake with a Buttercream Maple Frosting always tugs at my heart strings. It makes me want to lick the bowls (yes, plural) and sniff the air washing down the hallway; or sneak into the kitchen to see how much time is left only to hear my mom…

New Krusteaz Cookie Mixes Make Clean Up a Breeze
I don’t know where in the world you are, but in Southern California it’s been hot. Thanks to the heat, I haven’t been turning my oven on to do much baking, but I recently got a package full of really good reasons to bake cookies. Krusteaz sent me a package full of cookie mixes to try, complete with one apron for myself and an apron for one of the kids, a potholder, a set of measuring spoons and a super-fun set of cookie cutters. Despite the heat, we’ve baked a few batches and we are really enjoying the deliciousness of the soft, chewy cookies. The box came full of different…

What’s Hot in Southern California :: Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse
Have I mentioned that I was a vegetarian for many years before I became pregnant with my daughter? Well, that all changed about 9 weeks into the pregnancy. I was seriously having dreams about steak and hamburgers and it got to the point where I called my husband from a steakhouse one night as he was leaving work. My “come meet me for dinner at the bar I am about to order a steak” caught him a bit off-guard to say the least! Apparently, my little Kate was needing some protein! The entire pregnancy was like that and one of our absolute favorite steakhouses to go to is Flemings Prime…
