Reflections :: Appreciation Day
I made up a brand new holiday last week. Throughout this coming year, I’ve decided I will celebrate “Appreciation Day” on the fifteenth of every month. It is the one day of the month that I am committed to “tending myself”, to treating myself with what we therapists call unconditional positive regard. It literally means unconditional love: gentle, present, self-affirming, non-judgmental love. It’s revolutionary, if you think about it. An entire day in a conscious attempt to truly accept and love yourself for no other reason than because you deserve appreciation. It turned out to be tougher than it sounds. Look Good Feel Better Helps Women With Cancer
Each month I look for programs to help support by featuring them in our monthly dandelion moms Project Kindness and asking our lovely moms to help in any way they can. Together, our community has raised donations – monetary and items for the Project Night Night Tote Bags, hundreds of children’s books to a new library in the Dominican Republic and so many other wonderful acts of kindness that have been far-reaching. Just within the past…

Play :: Using Humor to Deal With Stress
Photo courtesy of Flickr Working at a large company gives you the benefit of having a lot of people to talk to and release some pent up emotions. But I did not want to become the person in the office that everyone ran from when they saw me coming because I was always full of bad news so I turned it into humor. Most of the time I know people were trying to figure out if I was just making up a good yarn or this was the truth about my life. I would begin by telling about a difficult situation at home with immediate or extended family or something…

Image courtesy of Flickr Ask the Doctor: Question: I’m not following my New Year’s ( healthy) resolutions. Any tips on how I can? January is a great time to cozy up on the sofa, with a warming tea, and reflect upon your last year. I’m not a fan of resolutions; however, taking a few moments to find ways to bring a healthier you, can be very rewarding. What made you feel the happiest and healthiest last year? I will ask myself: Did that kale smoothie make me feel more energized? Did it feel good to offer my Human Body Detectives books and apps for free? If yes, then I…

Things to Do When the Kids are Sick
Image courtesy of Flickr About a week before Christmas, my daughter and I caught that cold that is going around and were in bed for about two days. Of course, she recovered in no time and I was feeling bad for over a week. I sure wish I had her little immune system! We literally spent the two days in bed recovering watching movies. Thank goodness for Netflix and their huge array of movie options that is for sure! If you find yourself or your family sick in bed – here are is a list of movie options that Netflix put together for families to enjoy. Plus they provided us with some…
