What if Man and Giant Dinosaurs lived side by side?
My daughter and I were super excited to see a preview of The Good Dinosaur at The TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood a few weeks back. I love the concept the movies asks: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? I am such a fan of stories that show our world differently. And what a fun story The Good Dinosaur is for kids and big kids. Check out some of fun clips from the movie: Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo (voice of Raymond Ochoa) makes…

How to Tackle the “5 More Minutes” Bedtime Routine
Do you kids like to stall at bedtime? I think our daughter is the queen of stalling! Just the other night she threw a fit saying that I didn’t believe she was a big girl because I was making her go to bed before 8:30 (her usual bedtime). But she had been sick all week so thought it might be good idea. Wrong. So what do your kids say? That their eyelids hurt? They’ll die of thirst without more water? Mine usually throws out that she is hungry for a snack before bedtime. It’s like a big deja-vu when your own kid starts rattling off the same bedtime excuses you used back in…

Tips for Raising a Reader
Next week I will be speaking to parents at a preschool about the benefits of reading aloud to your children, so I thought this would be a good time to write about raising readers. I think back to when my son was about 6 months old. How I would hold him and read board books in the rocking chair. He would have let me read to him all day. Today, he is a 7-year old book-aholic who reads everything he can get his hands on. I like to think that reading consistently to him beginning at an early age helped guide him to that path. Reading to young children, including…

Take Your Kids on an “Indiana Jones” Adventure in Petra, Jordan
Petra is an ancient archeological site hiding deep in a canyon in the mountains of Jordan. There are temples, tombs, and homes all built into the bright red stone. A day in Petra is like an Indiana Jones adventure for kids – hiking though canyons, discovering ancient artifacts, and exploring caves with hidden rooms and chambers. In order to get to the main site, you have to walk through a narrow canyon called the Siq. With every few steps, you discover something new as you follow the unexpected twists and turns. My son loved wandering through the Siq, as we all pretended to be on an adventure as archaeologists to…

Breaking Bread with Brooke Burke
With the holidays upon us hosting or attending family dinners can be so much fun or chaotic or a little of both don’t you think? One of my favorite memories is the year my mother thought it would be fun to have a food fight on Thanksgiving. Yes, we were all sitting around the table enjoying our turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole (well, at the time my mom was the only one who liked that dish), and dinner rolls when my mom picked up a handful of mashed potatoes and threw them at my dad, laughing the whole time. After a few moments of complete shock…
