Health :: Treating Lice without Toxic Chemicals
For the past two years there has been pretty big breakout of lice going on at my daughter’s school. There is such the stigma about lice and most people are pretty freaked out if they find out their kids have it. It is such a hassle once your child gets lice and I heard from a friend of mine that they had to toss out many of their daughter’s toys, some clothes and bed linens while she was getting treated for lice. Another friend cut off all of her son’s hair (he had the long do going on) because he caught some at school and she took the drastic measure of…

The Art of Letting Go
Yesterday I was reminded of what a tough job parents have and knowing when to hold our kids tight and knowing when to let them try new things. On the way back from visiting my brother in San Clemente we drove up the coast and stopped off at a beach that we use to spend a lot of time at when my husband and I were dating. My parents had rented a gorgeous home along the coast in Laguna Beach years ago and when I came back from living in Japan I stayed with them for a couple months. Programming and Science Projects that Promote Learning
Have your kids started school back up this week or last week? Did you have tears of sadness or a little bit of joy that you have some free time on your hands? I think I had a little of both. Tips for Parents During and After an Emergency
Living in Southern California you can’t help but wonder when the next big earthquake might come along. It is a scary feeling when you don’t have any control over the forces that be. A few years back there was a large one that kept shaking the house so we ran into our daughter’s room and started running down the stairs with her in our arms. In hindsight, I realize this might not be the best strategy as you don’t want to be caught on stairs in a big earthquake. September is National Preparedness Month and PBS Kids has come up with some tips for parents to help them in the case of an emergency. …

3 Simple Ideas for School Lunches
Do you stress – even a little – about what you are going to put in your kids lunch for the day? Last year I was telling a friend of mine that my daughter kept leaving her lunch that I made her and was ringing up quite the tab at the school cafeteria. When I would ask my daughter about this she said she didn’t like what I had made her. Hmmm. My friend recommended that I have her help me in the mornings pack her lunch. That way, she couldn’t complain that she didn’t like her lunch – because she helped make it! I have also been…

Back to School :: Top Tips to Keep Your Kids Healthy
BACK TO SCHOOL: TOP TIPS TO KEEP YOUR KIDS HEALTHY Back to school is a bittersweet time: the sadness of letting go of the carefree summer days weaved in with the excitement to getting back into a routine. It is also a time of stress: getting organized, what if the kids get sick, after school programs and much more. I usually suggest to families to begin a structured routine a few weeks before school begins, for example, getting to bed a little earlier, eating meals at regular times, and eating more whole colorful foods that are packed with nutrients to support the body. Below are a few tips…
