Blended Family: Create Your Own Holiday Traditions
The Stepfamily Foundation states that more than 50 percent of the families in the United States are either re-coupled or remarried households. No one likes change, but with a blended family, change is inevitable. If you have a blended family, you know how difficult the holidays can be. The majority of households have their own holiday traditions, so when two families merge, challenges typically arise. While it is important to hold on to traditions that are already in place, your blended family should make new holiday traditions together. Mix it Up Dealing with contradicting family rituals and changing visitation schedules can add even more stress to the…

Reflections :: Telling Our Stories
Some of our most important women’s work exists in story. What is it I mean by women’s work? The value, intrinsic, of embracing authentically the parts of our inward experience of self intertwined with and thereby defined by being female. A nice, easy place to start are with the roles we play. Take a minute, go ahead. I am certain at least three roles pop immediately to head. Mother? Wife? Professional? Sister? Daughter? Best Friend? Caregiver? The list runs on and on. Be as specific as you can get. What is it I mean by story? The plot and themes that web together the tapestries of our lives.…

Reflections :: Imagination as Practice
Depth psychologists believe and even study something called the imaginal realm. The imaginal realm exists in every one of us. It communicates through symbols. It is an active, healthy part of human relating. Ever get a song stuck in your head, or see an image on your mind screen when someone is telling you a story? Those are symbols, the mouthpiece of the imaginal realm. The imaginal realm is precisely the way our intuition, our inner mysterious nature that infuses us with power and spark, reverence and awe, speaks. Neuroscience calls it right hempisphere brain functioning: intuition, inner guidance, creativity, empathy. I call it Soul. As I continue…

Musings :: Reconnecting with the Child Within
My husband and I have wanted to find a team sport that our daughter could play so she could learn about team camaraderie. We were fortunate to get on a soccer team for girls seven and under and she had her first practice and game this past week. My husband was quite the athlete and enjoyed playing sports throughout his childhood and into college so his competitive drive is pretty prevalent in any type of competition. His college buddies play a yearly golf tournament that they all go into like they are competing in The Masters. Our daughter has this same fierce competitive drive and has been known to break down in tears if she loses at Old Maid or…

Talk Like a Pirate Facebook Party September 19th
It was three years ago this month that I found out about International Talk Like a Pirate Day. On September 19th the entire world is asked to “talk like a pirate” for the day! This idea was started over 10 years ago by Mark “Cap’n Slappy” Summers and John “Chumbucket” Baur. I had a chance to interview these two fun mates and you can read more about how the idea to “Talk Like a Pirate” came to them and why they chose September 19th as the day to talk like a pirate here on my author site. As many of you know, my first storybook app and book, Penelope the…

Reflections :: The Reality of Intuition
Human beings have potentially available a tremendous range of intuitive powers. We are indeed wiser than our intellects. There is much evidence. We are learning how sadly we have neglected the capacities of the non-rational, creative “metaphoric mind”—the right half of our brain. This was Carl Rogers, the originator of the human potential movement, speaking in 1980. His practice of empathy, of meeting people exactly where they are at in an unconditional, non-judgmental way, and his devotion to the principle of each individual having untapped, infinite reserves of inner-potential made him one of the most important psychologists of modern times. How does it serve you to know, too,…
