Plan :: Keeping Your Paperwork Under Control
Tips to Keep Your Paperwork Under Control I am often asked how best to organize bills, checks, receipts and the like. Honestly, there is no “right” answer to that question. First, I would say ask who needs to access and use those documents. If it is only you then you will need to come up with a system that works for you. But, more often than not, someone else is going to need to find something contained in your system. So the key is to find a balance between what makes sense and works for you and making it simple enough for someone else to understand. I find…

Business :: Are You Ready For A Bookkeeper?
Are You Ready For A Bookkeeper? Though it is summer, the end of the year will be upon us soon enough and it might be time to start putting your paperwork in order for your tax preparer. But you have put it off all year. Now you have a big pile of “stuff” and the task seems overwhelming. You are not alone. Many small business owners choose to do their own bookkeeping and as a result the job gets pushed aside until tax time. As long as there is money in the checking account to pay the bills you are alright; right? Well, yes…and no. While you may have enough money…

Money :: Saving On Summer Fun
Saving On Summer Fun Those long, hot, lazy days are just around the corner. Have you planned how your family will spend them? Maybe more importantly, have you figured out the cost of your plans? There are about two months of days to fill during summer time off from school and kids want to be entertained every waking hour. No matter the size of your family, entertainment can be costly. With the average price of a movie ticket around $10 a family of four can expect to pay nearly $100 for a trip to the theater. I chose the movie theater example because it was a lower cost example…

Teaching Your Kids About Money
Teaching Your Kids About Money As a bookkeeper I have seen just about every method of saving and spending there is. Everyone has their own way of doing it. But where did they learn how? My mother always tells the story of when I got my first babysitting job at age 12. I took the money I earned and divided it into thirds. I put one third each into a Holiday Savings Account, my regular bank account and into my pocket for spending that week. The following week I took whatever was left in my pocket, added it to what I made and then did my dividing. I was…

Entering the World of Mom Bloggers at the Mom 2.0 Summit
This past weekend I attended the Mom 2.0 Summit at The Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel where hundreds of women bloggers were looking to connect with other women as well as with the sponsors and partners of the event such as Honda, Whirlpool, and Dove. It was pretty amazing to be in a room full of women (and a handful of men) who were so interested to learn some tricks of the trade about how to turn their hobbies or businesses into a more successful one. This was my first Mom Blogger event and I really didn’t know what to expect. Wow – was I impressed! From the quality of key-note speakers to the caliber of women in the…

Dwell: 5 Tips to Make Your Home Greener
Eco-Friendly Housing: Green Month (and Earth Day) is this month, and realtor.com conducted a survey to discover how eco-friendly housing is catching on with consumers. Turns out, more than 80% of respondents would like to own a residence that is eco-friendly, and nearly 70% would pay more money for it! I found it interesting that 61% of women felt that adding eco-friendly features added value to the home whereas 55% of men did not think they added value to the home! What do you think? We recently purchased an energy-efficient washer and dryer and they do use less energy as I noticed our bill went down. So there are definitely…
