Shipley Nature Center Kicks Off New Children’s Program
Shipley Nature Center: If you live in or near Huntington Beach, you might be excited to learn about a new children’s program that is being offered by Shipley Nature Center. If you’re not familiar with Shipley, it’s located in Central Park near Goldenwest Street. One of the first things you’ll see when you walk through the gates at Shipley Nature Center is the interpretive center. The front portion of the center is dedicated to informational items and small gifts, but travel to the back room and you’ll find signboards about the history of the surrounding area and the habitats you’ll find out on the trails. There are also plenty…

Unique Easter Egg Coloring Ideas
Easter and springtime is one of my favorite times of the year. When I was a child, we would spend hours decorating our Easter eggs in hopes that the Easter bunny would like them. One of my favorite memories – and one I still laugh about today – is the one where my younger brother and I walked down the stairs on Easter morning only to find that our standard poodle, Max, had gotten into our baskets filled with candy. The chocolate was all over the carpet and pieces of candy wrappers were strewn throughout the house. Upon seeing this my brother who was around four years old at that time…

April 26th is DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
You know how dangerous it can be if the wrong hands discover an old, half-full prescription medicine bottle deep in a cabinet. When my daughter was just a baby, I read a story about a mom of 3 year old twins who was absolutely heartbroken because they got into her prescription drugs upstairs in her bathroom while she was downstairs making dinner. Both children took a couple pills and unfortunately only one made it through after heroic efforts by a nearby hospital. This mom is now an advocate for telling parents the danger of these drugs and how to make sure they are kept safe out of little hands. Because of…

Smart Child Car Seat Could Save Lives
Image courtesy of Aneiros. Vehicular heat stroke deaths of children have gone up about 400% since 1992 (via Kids and Cars) and on average, one child dies every 10 days due to vehicular heat stroke (via Safe Kids WorldWide). A child’s body regulates body heat at 1/4th the efficiency as an adult. This means they heat up significantly faster than we do. A common misconception is that only “working” or “non-educated” class people are the ones who experience heat stroke deaths with children, when in reality it happens to people of all education and tax brackets. I remember hearing about a mother who drove to work and forgot to…
