The Power of Positive Reinforcement in Kids

    August 6, 2014 /

Image courtesy of Flickr The Power of Positive Reinforcement in Kids As parents, we want to raise thoughtful and caring kids who make good decisions. One way to do this quite effectively is by using positive reinforcement as often as possible. In most cases, praising kids for their positive behavior will help them to feel good about what they just did, which in turn increases the likelihood of them continuing to do it, Livestrong notes. A basic example of this is a child who remembers to feed and water his pet; if his mom tells him how proud she is of his responsible pet owner skills, her son will feel pretty darn…

Day Two :: Get Your Home Decluttered in 28 Days

    August 5, 2014 /

Today we will work on the front entryway – inside the home.  Yesterday we worked on the front doorstep – raked leaves, pine needles, and cleaned things up front so when you come home the first thing you see is a shiny and clean front area.  If you are inclined, why not get some inexpensive flowers at Home Depot or Lowe’s and plant them next to your door so they are the first thing you see when you leave the house and when you come back to the house.  I really believe this sets the tone for your day!  With this in mind – let’s do the front entryway inside…

Day One :: Get Your Home Decluttered in 28 Days

    August 4, 2014 /

A few weeks back I had a friend come by who helped me rearrange my living area to be more open and inviting.  She brought along a good friend of hers, Paul, who was visiting with his family from Ireland.  She had told he had a knack for visualizing spaces and offered to help!  I was game as I had wanted to rearrange our living area but didn’t know where to start.  As they both set in to rearrange our living space, I started to look at our home with new eyes.  He moved the table that we had set up for my daughter to use and play her LEGO’s on (yes, the container remained in our…

Instagram of the Day :: Japanese Paper Mache Mask

    August 3, 2014 /

The past couple weeks we have been doing a major decluttering and redecorating.  I plan to do a post about how we can “redo” our homes without buying anything!  One of the changes we made was move this Japanese paper mache mask from a spot that it was relatively unappreciated to front and center on our kitchen wall.  When I look at this mask, I remember sitting in a small Japanese restaurant in Hamamatsu City (known for their amazing eel) with a friend and mentioning how much I loved the small mask.  She said something to the sushi chef and next thing I know, he is taking it off the…

Melissa’s Musings :: 5 Tips To Stay In The Moment

    August 1, 2014 /

“Life isn’t a matter of milestones, but of moments.” ~ Rose Kennedy   Lately I have been thinking about how great it would be if I could just freeze time or at least slow it down and keep my little girl from growing up too fast.  She just celebrated her 8th birthday last week and I really can’t believe how quickly it goes by.  You hear that from mom’s who have older children but don’t really understand until you too, see your toddler suddenly go from shaky steps to running around on the soccer field in the blink of an eye.  Unfortunately, I don’t have a magic wand that will allow me to…

Prevention Key In Fight Against Breast Cancer – Part 2

    August 1, 2014 /

Image courtesy of Flickr   What you are about to read are suggestions to help reduce your risk of breast cancer. Studies have also shown a direct link between cancer risk and what we eat. There is some research out that suggests a possible link between women who consume large amounts of red meat and processed meats and higher rates of breast cancer. I believe the threat lies not only with the meat, but in how it’s cooked. There is no question that cooking at high temperatures (whether frying, broiling or barbecuing) produces cancer-causing chemicals called heterocyclic amines. The addition of vitamin E, and fruits like blueberries to your diet inhibits the effects of these…
