    Creating a Budget

    September 4, 2012 /

We have all heard things like: “It’s important to stay within your budget.”  But what IS a budget?  How do you create one? A budget is simply a list.  But it is a very important list.  This list shows you where your money comes from and where it goes.  Having one allows you to figure out what you can and cannot afford. Here are some steps to get you started creating your budget:   Pull out all of your bills.  Yes, ALL of them.  Even the nasty ones you wish would just disappear.  It is important to know exactly what money you need to pay out each month.…

    Just Call Me “Fish Killer”

    September 3, 2012 /

By: Michele Kelly MS, RD, CDE My daughter Ava, took home a guppy from kindergarten before summer vacation. We named her Molly. She was the third fish we received, the first two died (turns out you have to be a biochemist to keep a fish alive!) So, our one little fish, Molly was placed in her tank on the counter in the kitchen near the sink, with her cute Sponge Bob decorations. Let me tell you, this was one hungry guppy. She would literally stare at me while I was doing the dishes begging for food. After I fed her she would peck at the bottom looking for scraps.…

    An Adventure In Art

    August 31, 2012 /

I’m a traveling’ gal. I feel the need to admit that straight up. I love to get up and go. In fact, if I’m at home for more than 2 weeks straight I start to get a little ‘antsy pants’. So, feeling ‘the need for speed’, I gathered my husband and our two youngest kiddos (the two left at home), and hit the wild blue yonder in search of an adventure. This most recent adventure took us to Laguna Beach, California. I would also like to admit right here and now that I l-o-v-e Southern California. The beautiful beaches, beautiful weather, and beautiful people. (Hey, did I mention the word…

    By Starting to Love Within

    August 30, 2012 /

I was heartened to find an article on this site promoting emotional literacy in today’s young people.  Emotional literacy begins when we own the experience of our feelings by allowing them without judgment.   To be alive and Internet savvy right now suggests that physical needs—water, shelter, food—are met and likely well-surpassed.  Beyond these basic needs, beyond health and education and security, regardless of our economic standing, what calls us now is a push towards emotional evolution.  Towards living a daily experience of loving compassion. Emotional Literacy It makes me roll my eyes, just to write it.  A  daily living experience of compassion?  Well if that doesn’t smack of righteousness.  I’ve…
