Inflammation In the Body: What You Need To Know

    November 14, 2015 /

Inflammation In the Body: What You Need To Know Inflammation means to, “set on fire.” If there was no acute inflammation, wounds and cuts would never heal properly. However, on-going inflammation or chronic inflammation can lead to a wide range of diseases – hay fever, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis. Understanding Acute and Chronic Inflammation: Acute inflammation: Acute inflammation is the body’s first response to a harmful stimuli or foreign invader. It is primarily responded by the immune system with leukocytes (HBD: Battle with the Bugs) and/or the circulatory system from the blood into the injured tissues (HBD: A Heart Pumping Adventure). For example, if you sprain your ankle, chemicals form and…

PBS Digital Studios Provides Unique Learning Experiences

    November 13, 2015 /

PBS Digital Studios is the public broadcaster’s digital arm that is successfully bringing the YouTube generation into the PBS world with 20 million views per month. Part of the PBS Digital Studio’s strategy is to create programming that was digital first and not so much about shortening existing broadcasts. Part of the success is by finding creatives who are already successful on YouTube or other online platforms, particularly in science, and exposing them to a wider audience—in some cases turning YouTube hobbyists into full-time PBS hosts. (Source: FastCompany).   The various series in the PBS Digital Studios network, which range from animated explorations of neuroscience to lessons in Texas barbecue, are “purposefully…

“The Finest Hours” Out January 2016

    November 12, 2015 /

THE FINEST HOURS  I really enjoy movies based on actual events and the heroic action-thriller, “The Finest Hours” is the remarkable true story of the most daring rescue mission in the history of the Coast Guard. I can’t wait to see this movie and be on the edge of my seat I am sure!  The film will transport audiences to the heart of the action, creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale.   On February 18, 1952, a massive nor’easter struck New England, pummeling towns along the Eastern seaboard and wreaking havoc on the ships caught in its deadly path, including the SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound…

    Supporting #HopeForOurDaughters

    November 10, 2015 /

Though I watched the new movie Suffragettes a few weeks back, it has really stuck with me.  It has made me really think about and appreciate what our ancestors did to make the right to vote for women a reality.  Many women fought and lost their lives, many were jailed and suffered so that women today could have the basic right to vote.  It seems hard to believe that in some countries women are still fighting this battle.  As part of the Suffragette’s movement, we have some interesting facts about firsts for women in armed forces, as well a special video this week called #HopeForOurDaughters that looks at injustices we must still overcome. A Suffragette Timeline:…
