How Do I Know If It’s Autism or Something Else?

    November 3, 2020 /

You’re aware that your child has some differences, but you’re not sure what to make of them. Perhaps you’ve noticed a speech delay, an unexpected way of playing with toys, or a predictable pattern of meltdowns when routines are upset. These can all be signs of autism spectrum disorder, but they don’t in themselves warrant such a diagnosis.  Other Conditions That May Look Like Autism Autism spectrum disorder is such a broad diagnostic category that there is no single way to identify a child as being on the autism spectrum. Many of the behaviors and strengths associated with autism may also indicate other unrelated conditions. Some conditions that share traits…

Dandelion Moms Project Kindness :: Helping an Autism Center

    July 23, 2018 /

Dandelion Moms Project Kindness was created in order to support local, national and even worldwide organizations.  A few years back our community sent a small town in the Dominican Republic over 250 books so they could open up a town library.  Together, we helped raised over 300 Project Night Night tote bags that were given out to children in shelters across the country and supported the #LikeAGirl campaign that empowers young girls.  These are just some of the organizations that that our community has helped and it is something that is dear to my heart.  This month I was asked by a long-time dandelion mom if our community could help…

Why Manda Mosher’s ‘Cold Cold Love’ Warms Our Hearts

    May 2, 2018 /

Manda Mosher is a trend setter when it comes to music and the empowering impact it can make. Manda is a singer, songwriter and one half of the Americana duo CALICO The Band. You’d think she came straight out of Nashville but Manda and the band’s roots are strictly Southern California. In fact, CALICO stands for “California Country” and the music is fresh, vibrant, and real. It’s no surprise that one of Manda’s songs was chosen for Magnolia Pictures ‘Please Stand By,’ a film starring Dakota Fanning, Toni Collette, Alice Eve and Patton Oswald. It’s rare to find a film like Please Stand By, a coming-of-age story about a creative…

Amazing Mom Writes ‘Amazing Scientists’ to Empower Girls

    November 21, 2017 /

Julia Finley Mosca is a mom to a young daughter. She was frustrated with the lack of books showing girls and women in heroic roles. “It’s discouraging to think that with all the strides we’ve made in society, female protagonists (both fictional and non-fictional) are still severely underrepresented, especially non-white female characters.” Women are still the minority in STEM fields, which is one of the main reasons The Innovation Press and Julia wanted to do the Amazing Scientists series. Tell us about Amazing Scientists. I’m so excited about these books! The Amazing Scientists series is a fun and educational collection of biographies for kids. Each book details the life of…

Discover the Reasons for the #Activate4Autism Movement

    October 13, 2017 /

Chances are someone in your community or social network is on the autism spectrum. You may not be aware of the challenges they face. Most grow up with a sense of shame because they’ve been stereotyped, judged as strange, and often bullied for being different. If you have a loved one with autism, you know how important it is that we help the public gain a deeper understanding of the autism experience. At Geek Club Books, we make it our mission to engage and educate the public about autism—to replace stereotypes and fears with curiosity and wonder. We launched an #Activate4Autism movement that brings together voice actors who are in…

Netflix’s ATYPICAL original series shows the humanness in all of us

    August 12, 2017 /

Atypical is a coming of age story that follows Sam (played by Keir Gilchrist), an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny yet emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal? Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as his mother, Elsa, who is on her own journey of self-discovery.   Michael Rapaport plays his father, Doug. Brigette Lundy-Paine (Margot vs Lily, The Glass Castle) plays Sam’s sister Casey and Amy Okuda (How to Get Away with Murder)…
