Tips for Raising a Reader
Next week I will be speaking to parents at a preschool about the benefits of reading aloud to your children, so I thought this would be a good time to write about raising readers. I think back to when my son was about 6 months old. How I would hold him and read board books in the rocking chair. He would have let me read to him all day. Today, he is a 7-year old book-aholic who reads everything he can get his hands on. I like to think that reading consistently to him beginning at an early age helped guide him to that path. Disney Story Central is a Great Resource for Summer Reading
We are big fans of anything Disney! I just love how Walt Disney had a dream and vision and created one of the most amazing amusement parks and companies ever! At a conference in April I heard about the upcoming Walt Disney four-hour documentary that’s part of PBS’ American Experience series that will air September 14 and 15 and will talk about the man and his extraordinary vision. At this event, I heard how he “pitched” Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to his illustrators over a two hour period by acting out each scene because he needed to have them on board to create this movie! I have enjoyed all of…

Artist: Tricia Courtney
Recently I came across the work of artist Tricia Courtney whose oil paintings really struck something with me. I love the colors she chooses and how the flowers seem to pop off the canvas. We had a chance to speak this week about her work and her upcoming new book Floppy Sue’s Birthday Adventure that will be published as an eBook through Pixel Mouse House. Here is what she says about what inspired her to start creating and about her new story. A happy experience at the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts in Joplin, Missouri “many, many years ago” led to Tricia Courtney’s lifelong love of art. “My…

Artist/Illustrator Carolyn Le
One of my favorite things to do with my daughter is to go into the local bookstore and look at all of the beautifully illustrated children’s books. There is something quite magical about sitting down and opening up a fresh-off-the-press book with your child and reading through it together. I am drawn to many types of illustrations – I wouldn’t say I have one style I favor over another as I think it really depends on if the illustrations can make you smile, laugh, and even cry. I came across Carolyn Le’s work at a local Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) function about three years ago. …
