What Wisdom Can You Learn from a Geeky Mom?

    September 25, 2019 /

Interview with Author Jenny Bristol Jenny Bristol is one of four founding editors of GeekMom, one of the Geek Family Network blogs. The network focuses on content of interest to geeks, parents, and geeky parents, including products, places, interviews, experiences, and think pieces. When asked, Jenny says she “sort of fell into writing as a career.” She wrote for fun when she was a teenager but didn’t do anything with it. It wasn’t until her mid 30s when she started writing her own blog posts, which turned into writing for blogs, which led to writing books and other writing-based jobs. Jenny, give us an overview of yourself as a book…

Culture :: What You Need to Know About Gen-Z

    April 2, 2019 /

“We are on the verge of a generational shift with Gen-Z,” Christopher Wolf, a Goldman Sachs Research analyst, says. “By better understanding Gen-Z, we’ll also be better able to identify the influence that they’re having both economically and more broadly.”     Generation Z will account for 40% of all consumers by 2020, according to statistics compiled by Fast Company. (Source: Forbes.com). WHO ARE GEN-Z Anyone born from 1997 onward can be considered “post-millennial,” or, Gen Z.  My daughter is considered a Gen Zer and it fascinates me to see how much things have changed from when I was a kid.  From being exposed to technology since she was very young, her…

Tips for Spending Quality Time with the Family

    June 6, 2018 /

We like to enjoy a family night-in about once a week.  Usually it falls on a Friday or Saturday night and it’s a great time for us to spend time together, whether we are playing board games, cards (my daughter is extremely lucky… ) or watching a movie together, I do treasure these moments as I anticipate it might get harder to have my soon-to-be teenager to want to “hang with the parents.”  I think though that teens, especially teens, still need this family time to reconnect and stay grounded during these rather whirlwind years. One of our new favorite movies, A Wrinkle in Time, will appeal to just about every family.…

Curiosity May Be the Single Most Important Trait for Success in School

    May 16, 2018 /

This week I came across an article that really hit home with me and confirmed my  thoughts on the importance of creativity and why parents and educators should encourage this trait. New research published in the journal Pediatric Research in April suggests there may be one simple trait that can help kids learn and succeed in school, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Researchers who looked at the reading and math scores of 6,200 kindergarteners in 2006 and 2007 found that those kids whose parents rated their children’s behavior as most curious did the best in school, regardless of socioeconomic status. The results were consistent for both boys and girls, too. The…
