Interview with the Cast and Filmmakers of On The Basis of Sex
A few weeks back I had a chance to preview ON THE BASIS OF SEX and interview some of the cast and screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman, who happens to be Ruth Ginsburg nephew. The movie focuses on Ginsberg’s early years at Harvard, she was in one of the first classes that allowed women, and went on to try the Moritz case in order to set a precedent for discrimination on the basis of sex. It was ironic that the case was based on a man who was denied a tax write-off as a caretaker because the law at that time assumed only women could be caretakers. With this case,…

Tips for Spending Quality Time with the Family
We like to enjoy a family night-in about once a week. Usually it falls on a Friday or Saturday night and it’s a great time for us to spend time together, whether we are playing board games, cards (my daughter is extremely lucky… ) or watching a movie together, I do treasure these moments as I anticipate it might get harder to have my soon-to-be teenager to want to “hang with the parents.” I think though that teens, especially teens, still need this family time to reconnect and stay grounded during these rather whirlwind years. One of our new favorite movies, A Wrinkle in Time, will appeal to just about every family.…

Curiosity May Be the Single Most Important Trait for Success in School
This week I came across an article that really hit home with me and confirmed my thoughts on the importance of creativity and why parents and educators should encourage this trait. New research published in the journal Pediatric Research in April suggests there may be one simple trait that can help kids learn and succeed in school, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Researchers who looked at the reading and math scores of 6,200 kindergarteners in 2006 and 2007 found that those kids whose parents rated their children’s behavior as most curious did the best in school, regardless of socioeconomic status. The results were consistent for both boys and girls, too. The…

Why Manda Mosher’s ‘Cold Cold Love’ Warms Our Hearts
Manda Mosher is a trend setter when it comes to music and the empowering impact it can make. Manda is a singer, songwriter and one half of the Americana duo CALICO The Band. You’d think she came straight out of Nashville but Manda and the band’s roots are strictly Southern California. In fact, CALICO stands for “California Country” and the music is fresh, vibrant, and real. It’s no surprise that one of Manda’s songs was chosen for Magnolia Pictures ‘Please Stand By,’ a film starring Dakota Fanning, Toni Collette, Alice Eve and Patton Oswald. It’s rare to find a film like Please Stand By, a coming-of-age story about a creative…
