Family Is What You Make It!

    May 19, 2015 /

Families.  Today, we are seeing all types of families and they are starting to look less like The Cleavers!  What we see today has evolved into a vast range of possibilities.  Our family consists of in-laws, cousins, sister-in-laws, with a few adorable kids thrown in as well.  And since we celebrate both Christian and Jewish holidays we can be found honoring both religions around the holidays with Passover, Easter, Christmas and Hanukah.   This makes for a pretty busy holiday season but I wouldn’t want to trade it with anything else!  I just love that my daughter is gaining an understanding of our family traditions. Through the years, I have…

Putting the HAHAHA in the HOHOHO

    December 14, 2014 /

Image courtesy of Flickr It’s December (very much so) and my tree’s up but there’s nothing under it. Unless you count the tree skirt … does that count? And yes, you read that right: nothing under it! I always put a lot of thought into what I get every one. I want them to go “wow, just what I needed” or “I love it” so I do a lot of looking and window shopping [procrastinating]. What happens each and every year and seems to get later and later (pretty soon I’ll be out with all the men on Christmas Eve scurrying … oh who am I fooling I usually am out *lol*).…

The Heart of the Matter: Family Dynamics at Christmas Time

    December 19, 2013 /

“My experience is that the teachers we need most are the people we are living with right now.” -Byron Katie   I sure can’t think of a more potent statement for the holidays and family time. It reminds me of a self-help meeting I was at in my twenties, when a light went on so immediately for me that I saw my whole life differently.  Your family, some wise stranger said offhandedly, can push your buttons so well because they’re the ones that programmed them.  You know these moments, right?  As if basked in breaking daylight, a new and implicit understanding soaked through me.  It was the kind of moment…

Family Relationships: Handle with Grace and Compassion

    November 15, 2012 /

Three years ago I moved back home to live with my mom. This is may be out of the ordinary for a person in her thirties, maybe not. What was out of the ordinary was the fact that she and my dad were also living together, as roommates, after almost 20 years of being split up. It was an opportunity for me to enjoy the blessings of a two parent home. Wouldn’t it be marvelous if it were as easy as that? The hard reality showed quickly. It was pretty apparent that my dad was still reactive and quick-tempered, at times downright cruel. My mom as result was defensive, cold. These…
