Brain-Boosting Activities to Prevent the Summer Slide

    June 14, 2016 /

Studies show that during summer months kids who don’t read can lose two to three months of the skills they learned in school. Use it or lose it right? But how do you go about getting in daily activities that help prevent summer slide? It’s easier than you might think, and it doesn’t have to be limited to sitting at home reading a book. Yes, go to your library and get books. Join some summer reading programs. And encourage children to read for at least 20 minutes a day on their own. But here are a few other ways to keep their brains in business so they are ready for…

    A Kindle Fire Giveaway!

    January 11, 2016 /

One of my favorite pastimes is to cuddle up on the sofa and read a good book.  I have to be honest that for some time I was opposed to reading anything but a book book.  But after I received a Kindle Fire last year I was sold – for many reasons.  It is really nice that I don’t need to get up to turn the lights on or off at night because the tablet has a couple reading options that don’t require lights.  And depending on your preference, you can opt for a low or brighter light.  You don’t need reading glasses as you can change the size of the…

    National Dictionary Day October 16th

    October 16, 2015 /

On October 16, 1758, Noah Webster was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Very few people went to college in Webster’s day, but he loved learning. So much so that his family chose to send him to Yale in 1774 when he was just 16 years old. He graduated in 1778. Webster could not afford to continue on to study law, so he chose to become a teacher. Webster was unhappy with the books that were used in American schools as they came from England and spoke often of allegiance to King George. Webster wanted students to learn from American books so he worte one himself. In 1783 Webster penned A Grammatical…

The Importance of Celebrating National Reading Month

    March 25, 2015 /

Start a routine that inspires them for life: This month is National Reading Month and schools and parents across the country are getting involved in promoting a love of reading in children.  I love reading to my daughter and continue to do so even though she can read early chapter books.  It is more than reading to her, we enjoy this downtime and pick out books to read together. Young children who read 20 minutes per day scored above the 90th percentile on standardized reading tests.* Take the challenge to read to your child each day, and create a love of reading to last a lifetime.
