The Importance of Celebrating National Reading Month
Start a routine that inspires them for life: This month is National Reading Month and schools and parents across the country are getting involved in promoting a love of reading in children. I love reading to my daughter and continue to do so even though she can read early chapter books. It is more than reading to her, we enjoy this downtime and pick out books to read together. Earn a FREE Book in the PBS Kids and Pottery Barn Kids “Summer Reading Challenge”
You know what a big fan I am of PBS Kids programming, but you might not know how much I devoured the Pottery Barn Kids catalogue when my daughter was in the womb to get ideas for her nursery! As a kid my mom used to take me to the library all the time, and it was always a great feeling finding new stories to experience, or just to check out a magazine or video. (Remember the days of VHS?) Recently, I read an…

Education: Gershwin and Mission Read
It’s hard to remember life without it…I, like many of you, am a part of a generation of students who grew up without the Internet – or even computers. While in elementary school in New Jersey, our teachers and librarians taught us to use the Dewey Decimal system to locate books. Remember those — the actual (paper index) cards with numbers and stamped dates! One assignment in particular stands out – we had to read a biography of a person we found interesting and then write a book report. My Lifetime Love Affair with George Gershwin: I went to a small elementary school and the set of biographies…

JetBlue and PBS Kids Soar with Reading Program
Karl Alexander is a professor of sociology at John Hopkins University in Baltimore. He has studied the same group of almost 800 people over a span of 27 years. His research has concluded that children from less affluent, less educated backgrounds fare worse later in life than those who come from more privileged backgrounds. But his research also shows that what children do over the summer as far as educational activities can close this achievement gap. He has concluded that education outside the classroom, through summertime activities rooted in family life, can boost a child’s prospects for the future. (Source: www.cslspreads.org). A Lack of Resources: The problem is that many of these less affluent…
