Tips for Raising a Reader
Next week I will be speaking to parents at a preschool about the benefits of reading aloud to your children, so I thought this would be a good time to write about raising readers. I think back to when my son was about 6 months old. How I would hold him and read board books in the rocking chair. He would have let me read to him all day. Today, he is a 7-year old book-aholic who reads everything he can get his hands on. I like to think that reading consistently to him beginning at an early age helped guide him to that path. Reading to young children, including…

The Book App Alliance is a Great Resource for Parents
About two years ago I was approached by a group of authors who wanted to form a new organization that would help parents and teachers find quality storybook apps in the App Store. I was game to get on board since I know how tough it is for parents to sift through the thousands of apps available and I wanted to be a part of an organization that supports indie authors! The Book App Alliance was created by leading authors who create interactive books for kids. We have found that many parents and teachers are confused about digital books (eBook vs. book app), how to use them, and how to go about finding hidden gems in the App Store. The…

Disney’s Finding Nemo
You have probably seen the advertisments for the re-release of Finding Nemo in 3D this past Friday and maybe even went to see this wonderful and Academy Award winning story of Nemo, Marlin and his friend, Dory at the theatres! In the wake of this re-release, Disney has released two new apps including Finding Nemo: Storybook Delux and Finding Nemo: Interactive Comic. Finding Nemo: Storybook Delux: This is a great storybook app that has authentic underwater sounds, engaging narration and even original graphics from the movie. Some of the special features in this app include a Whale Chat with Dory where your child can talk to Dory and hear their words translated into WHALE! How fun…

Artist Jennifer Mercede
Creating and publishing a children’s book can take months and even years to see the light. I wrote Gerry the Giraffe about five years ago and had the story on the back burner until I came across an illustration of a giraffe in a Land of Nod catalogue. The picture of the giraffe was so unique and wonderful that I wanted to see Gerry come to life with this illustrator! By chance, the following month the illustrator’s name was mentioned in the updated Land of Nod catalogue so I proceeded to find out more about this creative artist. I contacted Jennifer Mercede and we spoke about the possibility of doing a book and app together. This…
