Reduce Stress and Reconnect with your Kids

    February 25, 2016 /

Winter break was a welcome treat for me and my family. My kids and I needed it. Badly. Like many other parents, I spend most days doing schoolwork, shuttling kids around to activities, running errands and trying to keep up with the chores. When we started homeschooling last year, I thought we would be less pressed for time. That just isn’t the case. Before Winter break I found myself struggling to keep up. I was irritable and anxious. My kids were seeing a lot of “Grouchy Mommy”. Over the break I realized that I needed to back off of our schedule and take breaks for us to reconnect. We were…

The Importance of Managing Our Stress

    June 30, 2014 /

Image courtesy of PGeveryday The other day I was looking at the P&Geveryday website as part of this campaign and came across an article that made me want to stop browsing and immediately clicked-through to read it.  The post talked about the many signs that your body gives you when you are under stress and tips on how to decompress.  I have been thinking a lot about stress lately and how we underestimate the power that stress has over our physical and mental health.  Sometimes we don’t realize we are getting too stressed but our body will give us signs that it might be a good idea to slow down or take some time for ourselves.  …

Ask the Doctor :: Getting Healthy After The Holidays

    January 10, 2014 /

Image courtesy of Flickr   Ask the Doctor: Question: I’m not following my New Year’s ( healthy) resolutions. Any tips on how I can? January is a great time to cozy up on the sofa, with a warming tea, and reflect upon your last year. I’m not a fan of resolutions; however, taking a few moments to find ways to bring a healthier you, can be very rewarding. What made you feel the happiest and healthiest last year? I will ask myself: Did that kale smoothie make me feel more energized? Did it feel good to offer my Human Body Detectives books and apps for free? If yes, then I…

Wellness :: Tips to Manage and Reduce Your Workplace Stress

    December 27, 2013 /

There are so often not enough hours in the day. You’re spread thin to the point of becoming brittle. Demands on your time and energy include your home, your family and your career. Although all of these stressors may also be your greatest blessing, there’s no denying the toll they take on your energy and state of mind. Like many of us, you may be at a point where you’d so much rather throw up your hands in a gesture of surrender and say, “ENOUGH!” A stressful workplace can lead to anxiety, sleep disorders, illness and missed days at work; which can lead to common workers compensation injuries…

Ask the Doctor :: Tips to Help Your Child Cope with Stress

    October 18, 2013 /

Ask the Doctor: Question: My teen is showing signs of stress, mostly due to homework and sports. What can I do to support her, nutritionally?   We tend to forget that our children get feel stressed: from learning to walk and talk to taking exams. Most stress is acute; however, when stress becomes chronic, not only are the adrenal glands working harder – additional hormones are released – other systems of the body begin working to balance the extra load of the adrenals, nutrient distribution is increased possibly causing low levels of certain nutrients plus, the immune system becomes suppressed (approximately 70% of the immune system is located in the…

Ask the Doctor: Natural Remedies for Anxiety

    June 29, 2013 /

Ask the Doctor: Question: I feel constant state of anxiety and I am worried it may get worse. What can I do? When a parent, we tend to worry, be fearful and nervous with (almost) every move our kids take: from learning to walk to driving a car.  To a degree, these are all normal; however, if these feelings become extreme and manifest into physical symptoms, a diagnosis of mild to severe anxiety might happen. Anxiety is a general term when people experience challenges in their lives that cause nervousness and worry. It occurs in acute situations but when people have trouble letting go and become nervous and worried constantly…
