It’s No “Wonder” Why We #ChooseKind

    June 11, 2017 /

We are so excited as a family to see “Wonder” coming to the big screen this November. My daughter read the book last year and fell in love with it and connected as well with it. She talked about “Wonder” from the time she started until she put it down – and it’s continued on. She even commented on several occasions that they should: “make it a movie”. And voila! Now it’s come to fruition. I’m writing this as a prod to go and see it when it comes out; although before that happens I highly recommend if you haven’t (or even if you have) to read the book [or…

Disney Story Central is a Great Resource for Summer Reading

    June 11, 2015 /

We are big fans of anything Disney!  I just love how Walt Disney had a dream and vision and created one of the most amazing amusement parks and companies ever!  At a conference in April I heard about the upcoming Walt Disney  four-hour documentary that’s part of PBS’ American Experience series that will air September 14 and 15 and will talk about the man and his extraordinary vision.   At this event, I heard how he “pitched” Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to his illustrators over a two hour period by acting out each scene because he needed to have them on board to create this movie!   I have enjoyed all of…

PBS Kids Promotes Reading All Year Long

    September 15, 2014 /

As part of the PBS Kids VIP group I was provided some books and other materials to host a PBS Kids Summer Reading party.  My daughter and I are always up for a party and especially if it is one where we are encouraging young readers a love of books!  Here are some ideas we incorporated into our party that you can use to host your own book club or book reading party.  What a great way to encourage a love of reading in our kids.     Tips to Throw A Book-Reading Party:   Host the Party Outside:  If weather permits, why not host the book reading…

Parenting :: Safe from the Summer Slide

    July 1, 2013 /

You have definitely heard these two warm weather catch phrases: summer reading and summer slide.  Nationwide, in both educational and literacy circles, parents, teachers, librarians and elected officials discuss ways in which to keep children actively learning throughout the summer months, especially as it relates to reading and math.  There is definitely something to be said for the idea of keeping the brain active and not wanting kids to “forget” all of the skills they learned during their 180 days spent in school (as a stay-at-home mom for many years, I can relate…insert “mommy brain”).   The amazing part to me…study after study reveals the same thing.  And the…
