The Book App Alliance is a Great Resource for Parents

    April 22, 2015 /

About two years ago I was approached by a group of authors who wanted to form a new organization that would help parents and teachers find quality storybook apps in the App Store.   I was game to get on board since I know how tough it is for parents to sift through the thousands of apps available and I wanted to be a part of an organization that supports indie authors!  The Book App Alliance was created by leading authors who create interactive books for kids.  We have found that many parents and teachers are confused about digital books (eBook vs. book app), how to use them, and how to go about finding hidden gems in the App Store. The…

Latest & Greatest :: The Amazon fireTV

    August 21, 2014 /

Image courtesy of lsbf.org.uk Amazon fireTV delivers! For the past two weeks, the kids and I have been trying out the new “amazon fireTV” courtesy of the folks over at Amazon. It’s super small. Like tiny. I can grab it and slip it into my purse and take it on vacation with me ‘small’. I like that. I like it. Now you’re probably going “hmm, how small is it”? Let me tell you! It’s just 3/4 of an inch (thick) – it’s a tad smaller than my external backup drive! You can sit that baby anywhere and it blends right in (you may even go where is it … haha)!…

Would You Track Your Teen with Tech?

    July 3, 2014 /

Would You Track Your Teen with Tech? It’s 9 p.m. on Saturday night. Do you know where your 15-year-old daughter is? Gone are the days of reading your teen’s diary to find out what she’s getting into. Now there’s an app for that—many apps for that in fact. From infant trackers to auto GPS and computer activity monitoring, you can quite literally track your children from birth. But should you? Consider some of the pros and cons and decide for yourself.   Know Where Your Kids Are From soccer practice to math tutoring, then to her lab partner’s home to finish their chemistry report—a teen’s schedule can be a…

Tech :: How to Outsmart Your Children’s Smartphone

    March 13, 2014 /

Smartphones are as much a part of our children’s lives as overstuffed backpacks and homework. In fact, it’s become the norm to see kids with their own phones and toddlers playing Dots on Mom’s new Galaxy. Phone? What Phone? Texting has become the preferred way to communicate for kids and teens, according to a 2012 study by the Pew Research Center. And smartphones are rarely used for making phone calls—rather they’re the favored device for playing games, taking photos, searching the web, and interacting with others on social media sites or apps. Considering the amount of time that your child spends on her phone, are you aware of the…
