Chuck Jones Center for Creativity Thanksgiving Camp

    November 9, 2014 /

“I believe that all children will learn the joy of drawing if encouraged by ample materials, and love strong enough from their parents–and it must be very strong–to refrain from the well-intended but deadly use of unqualified criticism or excessive praise during the very early, very crucial, very creative years of childhood.” –Chuck Jones   Have fun at the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity Camp over Thanksgiving Break: Join the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity Camp the week of Thanksgiving. They have designed a 3-day camp to give kids an array of endeavors such as painting, drawing and music. Yes, the whole gamut of creative adventure!  Some fun things the kids will do include:…

SoCal Getaway for Family Fun: Big Bear

    November 8, 2014 /

I love the Great Outdoors, and I love giving my children the chance to play in and explore the great gifts Mother Nature has given us. I was born in the mid-west and spent the first six years of my life running barefooted through fields, picking berries from the bushes along the dirt road near my grandparents’ farm, and dipping my toes in the lake. Some of my fondest childhood memories include punching holes in the lids of mason jars and chasing fireflies. Here in Southern California, there are no lightning bugs. And the opportunities for real, natural play are harder to find. There are opportunities, thanks to…

    Apple Picking in Southern California

    October 23, 2014 /

Image courtesy of Flickr When I think about fall I can’t help but think of the beautiful reds and yellows of the changing leaves, and the thoughts of pumpkins and apples fill my mind.  I love the way the air finally feels crisp in the early morning, and the scent of cinnamon is in the air.  I want my children to have those same memories, and the feelings of joy and excitement this season brings.  However, fall is a hard thing to come by in Southern California.  With the temperatures still well in the 80’s, and the only color leaves we see are green or brown, we have to head…

Homeschool At The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach

    September 26, 2014 /

The Aquarium of the Pacific Offers the Perfect Educational Experience: As a homeschooling parent, I am constantly on the lookout for fun and educational adventures to go on with my kids. So last week, we went on our first official field trip of the school year – to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. Normally, we wouldn’t have done this on a school day, as admission for three is well over $50. But, on a handful of select days throughout the year, the Aquarium holds online sales for homeschoolers to pre-purchase tickets for these select dates at the deeply-discounted student rate of $6 per person. Score! The Aquarium…

Shipley Nature Center Kicks Off New Children’s Program

    April 10, 2014 /

Shipley Nature Center: If you live in or near Huntington Beach, you might be excited to learn about a new children’s program that is being offered by Shipley Nature Center. If you’re not familiar with Shipley, it’s located in Central Park near Goldenwest Street. One of the first things you’ll see when you walk through the gates at Shipley Nature Center is the interpretive center. The front portion of the center is dedicated to informational items and small gifts, but travel to the back room and you’ll find signboards about the history of the surrounding area and the habitats you’ll find out on the trails. There are also plenty…

    December 28, 2013 /

Are you looking to do something fun with the family to help celebrate the new year together?  Me too!  I went searching to find some fun things to do in Orange County that are geared towards a family celebration.  There are some pretty cool events happening around town that you can do during the daytime with the family.  Have a safe and fun New Year’s Eve celebration!     The Discovery Science Center: My daughter is a huge fan of The Discovery Science Center and goes at least once a month with grandma.  That is their place to go to and I love that she is learning about science with all…
