Top 10 DIY Craft Projects with Mason Jars

If your house is anything like my own, it is safe to say that there is a hefty surplus of leftover re-sealable jars. My kitchen was absolutely cluttered with an excess of used mason jars that I refused to throw out because I knew that someday I would put them to use.

After years of compiling my collection, and some “motivation” from my boyfriend, I finally decided to put that quiescent stock of mason jars to use and do a little bit of DIY decorating, ok fine A LOT of decorating. With the help of Pinterest I was able to find countless craft projects designed around utilizing old mason jars. Here is a list of my ten favorite projects that I tried:

#1. Soap Dispenser

 

Materials:

  • Mason jar (w/ lid)
  • Pump (Use an old pump from a used bottle of soap or lotion)
  • Soap
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hammer + nail
  • Needle nose pliers

Terrarium

Materials:

  • Large mason jar (w/ lid)
  • Pebbles or gravel
  • Activated charcoal
  • Potting soil
  • Moss, ferns, tillandsia, etc.
    • These items can be found at a local nursery

Materials:

  • Mason jar (w/ lid)
  • Any piece of scrap fabric
  • Hot glue gun
  • Stuffing
  • Pencil
  • Scissors

Materials:

  • Mason jar(s)
  • Sand
  • Twine
  • Tea light(s)
    • Can also be purchased at local craft store

Instructions:

  1. Fill bottom 1 ½ inch of jar with sand
  2. Wrap twine tightly around mouth of jar
  3. Insert candle
  4. Hang from wherever you desire, such as a branch

#7. “Fireflies in a jar” Night Lantern

 

Firefly Jar

Materials:

  • Mason jars (w/ lids)
  • Glow sticks (colors depend on preference)
  • Glitter

Instructions:

  1. Cut open glow sticks and pour liquid into jar
  2. Add glitter
  3. Close lid and shake

#8. Snow Globe

  • Mason jar (w/ lid)
  • Water resistant glue
  • Liquid glycerin
    • Can be found at your local drug store
  • Glue
  • Figurine of your choice
  • Glitter
  • Water

  • Mason jar (w/ lid)
  • Baking soda
  • Essential oils
    • Can be found at local drug store or grocery store
  • Nail

*I know this is cooking and not crafts but it was too awesome to not include!

Materials:

  • Mason jars
  • Pizza dough (homemade or store bought)
  • Tomato sauce (homemade of store bought)
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Toppings (optional):
    • Basil, pepperoni, veggies, etc.

 There you have it, 10 crafty container projects just waiting to be tried out! Practically every one of these projects is not only incredibly easy, but requires very little time as well. Now I know you are all anxious to try out all of these projects as soon as possible so start gathering every mason jar you can find, you’re going to need a lot! Unfortunately not everybody had a personal stock of mason jars like me, but luckily they can easily be found online at sites such as Amazon.
