Crafts :: PomPom Fish

There is something really fun about making pompoms. I love to play with the yarn and make different color combinations in different sizes. They are so very cute to decorate a present with or to make a garland.  I have even made colorful mobiles.  You can leave them as is, or you can give them fins and eyes and turn them into fish.

You will need:

  • Yarn
  • card stock
  • scissors
  • felt
  • glue gun
  • googly eyes
  • at the end of the post is the ‘donut’ shape and the fins template to print out

Cut 2 ‘donuts’ out of card stock. You want it to be a little stiff, so I would not recommend just plain paper. We are going to wrap the yarn around it. I like to use more than one yarn string at the same time. Saves a lot of time.

Hold the ends in your fingers and start wrapping yarn all around. You can also use a needle if it is easier for you.

The more yarn you wrap the puffier your pompom will be. You will also see that different kinds of yarn works differently. Some are not so fluffy.

When you are done, make a little opening enough for the scissors to fit in and carefully cut between the two ‘donuts’ of card stock.

Take a separate piece of yarn and make a double knot between the layers of card stock as tight as you can.

Now you can cut the card stock, or simply pull it over the yarn so you can re use it.

I left an extra piece of yarn dangling from my pompom but you can cut it.  For the fish’s body parts I used felt and heart shapes work really well for fins. (below is a printout template) The hot glue gun is quick and easy to attach the felt and eyes to your pompom. If there is little fingers, tacky glue works fine too.

I have these pompom makers from Clover, that makes it a whole lot easier.  You can buy them directly from their site or on Amazon here. I love that they always come in pairs of two different sizes.

While I was making all the fish, I quickly had to take a call and when I turned my back, my cat Merlin decided to test them out. I haven’t seen the yellow fishy since. So they are great as cat toys too!
