Ideas for a Dragon-themed Party!

A few years back when the previews were showing for the new How to Train Your Dragon movie my daughter and I couldn’t wait to see it!  We even hosted a dragon-themed birthday party the year the first movie came out and have some fun ideas you can use for your next party.  This past month, Netflix aired their original series Dragons: Race to the Edge and introduces some of the most exciting dragons yet, each with its own amazing abilities — shock waves, cannon balls and fire blasts, just to name a few.

With the magical Dragon Eye, an artifact Hiccup finds aboard an abandoned ship, Hiccup learns there is more outside the confines of Berk, and that a little curiosity and determination can make every day an exciting journey. In Hiccup’s own words, “this changes everything.”  This is a really fun series that might bring a tear or two to a parent’s eye as it shows them leaving the dragon nest so to speak.  Similar to how Toy Story can make any parent reflect back on how time flies too quickly, this sweet tale also makes one think about how our kids are growing up too darn fast.  The quote “The days are long but the years are short” comes to mind.

For my daughter’s 4th birthday we hosted a Dragon-theme party – with a dragon cake and all!  It was so much fun preparing for this party and making the cake really wasn’t as hard as I would have thought.  Here are some fun dragon-themed party ideas to try out while you enjoy the new Dragon: Race to the Edge series on Netflix.

As I mentioned, we celebrated my daughter’s 4th birthday party at a local park and she wanted a dragon-themed party.  We had just seen How to Train Your Dragon and fell in love with Hiccup and all the dragons!  Here are some ideas you can incorporate into your next party.

Dragon Inflatables: This guy was found on Oriental Express.  It is a great table topper and you just need to add balloons and you are set!

DIY Dragon Game:  I purchased some rubber rings and the kids took turns trying to throw them around the dragon’s head.

DIY Dragon Pin-the-Wing on the Dragon:  You can print out a picture of Hiccup and have it blown up and mounted at your local Kinko’s.  I then just printed out the wings and cut them up to make our own Pin-the-Wing on the Dragon.  A really easy addition to your dragon-themed party.

Coloring Wands:  When the kids are little I liked to have coloring sections for when they need some downtime.  These wands were found on Oriental Express.

DIY Dragon Cake:

I used How to Train Your Dragon characters and ships and put it around our dragon. It was a nice addition to this fun cake!  I used this tutorial from Instructables.com.
