Tips to Incorporate the Color of the Year in your Interior

Every year the Pantone Color Institute, the worldwide reference for colors for the design professionals, selects “The Color of the Year”, a symbolic color, which supposedly reflects the color trend of the year to come. As they put it better than me, the color of the year is “a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.”

Pantone 2015 Color of the Year was Marsala, a deep burgundy-earthy red, and 2014 Pantone Color of the Year was Radiant Orchid, a strong and joyful purple.

In 2016 we are very fortunate because for the first time Pantone has selected not only one, but 2 colors as Color of the Year: “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity” blue (PANTONE 13-1520 & PANTONE 15-3919), two pastel and subtle colors.

Discovering them, I first though of the classic colors used in nurseries and kids bedrooms. Rose for girls, blue for boys… But, actually, they are way more than that…

Indeed Rose Quartz is a subtle, pastel rose, for sure very feminine, but that can be coordinated with a broad range of shades, from neutral, light colors to warm and darker ones. It will look great in the different rooms of the house, not only little girls’ bedrooms, but also in the dining room, in a home office, and even in the kitchen! A Rose Quartz sofa, or an accent chair will be absolutely beautiful and a statement in a living room. If you don’t dare the pink sofa, some Rose Quartz accessories placed nicely on a coffee table, on the wall, or as decorative pillows will be perfect too!

Serenity Blue on the other hand is a more masculine color. Deep and airy, it reminds of the blue sky. It is a soft, classic and relaxing color that can be easily used anywhere in the house. For a Scandinavian or beach house look, you will match it with wood, and white and neutral shades. For a more graphic look, you will use black or dark grey colors.

Contrasting, yet complementary, simple and soft, Rose Quartz and Serenity can be used together or separately to create a relaxing environment. Plus, they will easily fit any interior style: modern, romantic, vintage, or classic.

Pantone helps you use the Colors of the Year by suggesting color schemes that you can use in your interior. As you can see, The Colors of the Year allow a large variety of combinations, from timeless to daring.
