Tips for Keeping Your Furry Family Safe this Holiday Season!

One of my favorite childhood stories I like to share is the one where my little brother (though 6″ feet tall he’ll always be my little brother) thought that our Standard Poodle, Max, ate the Easter Bunny one year.  He was around four years old and we were walking down the stairs on Easter morning only to find that Max had eaten our baskets filled to the rim with candy.  The chocolate was smeared all across our white carpet.  My brother started crying thinking that Max had eaten the Easter Bunny as well!  To this day I can hear his little voice crying “Max ate the Easter Bunny!”  My mom assured him that he hadn’t and that hopped away through our sliding door. Luckily Max was okay but as most of us know chocolate can be poisonous for dogs!

This brings me to present day where I am very careful about keeping poisonous plants and food out of arms reach of both my dog and cats.  Here are some tips from the ASPCA for keeping your furry family safe this holiday season!

  • Christmas Tree: Be sure to anchor your holiday tree securly so your cats or dogs can’t tip it over.  This will also ensure they don’t drink any spilled tree water which can be a breeding ground for bacteria which could cause stomach problem for your pet.
  • Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems.
  • Tinsel-less Town: Kitties love this sparkly, light-catching “toy” that’s easy to bat around and carry in their mouths. But a nibble can lead to a swallow, which can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting, dehydration and possible surgery. It’s best to brighten your boughs with something other than tinsel.
  • Wired Up: Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out of paws’ reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus, while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet’s mouth and digestive tract.
