A Monster Calls Opens in LA and New York Theaters December 23rd, Nationwide January 6th

A visually spectacular and unabashedly emotional drama from director J.A. Bayona (“The Impossible”). 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) is dealing with far more than other boys his age. His beloved and devoted mother (Felicity Jones) is ill. He has little in common with his imperious grandmother (Sigourney Weaver). His father (Toby Kebbell) has resettled thousands of miles away.

But Conor finds a most unlikely ally when the Monster (portrayed by Liam Neeson in performance-capture and voiceover) appears at his bedroom window one night. Ancient, wild, and relentless, the Monster guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith, and truth that powerfully fuses imagination and reality.  When I saw the movie a couple weeks ago I wasn’t sure what to expect.  One of the other mom bloggers was rushing out of the theater before the movie started and I asked her where she was going.  She said that she wanted to get some tissue because she had already seen the movie and said she cried, a lot, throughout it.  I asked her to grab me a tissue or two and boy I sure wish I had asked for a whole box of Kleenex.  I truly don’t remember the last time a movie made me feel so deeply.  You will feel such a wide range of emotions during and after watching this film.

A Monster Calls is one of the best movies I have ever seen.  Visually it is quite stunning and the performances by the talented Felicity Jones, Siguourny Weaver, Lewis MacDougall, Toby Kebbell and the uber talented Liam Neeson are all top notch. Liam Neeson plays the monster in such a way you feel his presence and power through the screen.  You feel he is in the theater with you.  I am not saying this subject matter is an easy one to address but the filmmakers and screenwriters all did such a beautiful job of portraying this aspect of life in such a way you will walk out of the theater thinking about this movie for a long time.  I am just warning you now though, please bring in lots of tissue!
