Part One :: SKIN CARE BASICS FOR AN AGELESS LOOK!

SKIN CARE BASICS FOR AN AGELESS LOOK!

This summer I started thinking about really uping my skin care game.  I was a lifeguard for over three years in high school and into college and let’s just say I wasn’t too interested in using sun protection over 10.  Remember Ban de Soleil?  Yep, that was my preferred sunscreen.  Fast forward a few years and I wised up and haven’t really been in the sun for most of my adult life.  Of course, we hit the beach and pool but I always cover up and wear a hat.  Skin cancer scares me quite a bit and that is one of the main reasons I started looking into what lasers could do to help minimize the skin care damage my years of sunbathing in my youth. I was also interested to see what treatments might help to ward off any potential skin problems.

Through Cutera Lasers, I found the most amazing skin care specialist, Lynne Brownell, who is so knowledgeable about good skin care.  She works at Aesthetic Care in San Juan Capistrano and has been a clinical Nurse Practitioner for over three decades as well as has her MSN and quite interested (and knowledgeable) about the role nutrition plays in our skin and overall health.  I really like that about her because I’ve always believed that so much of our health comes from what we put into our bodies.  There is only so much these skin care treatments and creams can do if you aren’t doing your part and making sure you are nourishing yourself from the inside-out.

I was just speaking with a friend about how  at our age you start noticing the difference between those who take the time to care for themselves and those who don’t make time.  We spoke about how important it is for moms to take this time for themselves – from finding time to get some exercise, eat healthy (but treat yo’self from time to time!), and dress in a way that makes you feel great. I’m all about women empowering themselves and others and taking this time for yourself is necessary ladies! Because, really, in the end we have more to give to our family when our heads and health are in a good place.

Lynne shared with us some secrets about good skin care and what options are available on the market today.  It seems like there is so much other there it is hard to decipher what is what but I hope that this 3-part series helps clarify some things for you and puts you on the path to glowing skin and feeling your best!  You deserve to look and feel great moms!

NON-SURGICAL TREATMENTS:

Photofacial laser treatments are best to target brown and skin discolorations from sun-damage, age spots, acne discolorations and melasma caused by pregnancy , birth control pills or menopause. The light absorbs the color and returns the skin to an even tone. The treatment improves the ability for light to pass through the skin, giving it a brighter, healthier appearance. Laser treatments are the GOLD Standard for broken capillaries and facial veins as well. These are virtually pain-free treatments with little visible after-care needs. (I prefer Cutera’s Limelight laser)

Acne scars treated with ZO 3 STEP PEELS

Medical-grade peels, such as Dr. Zen Obagi’s TCA PEEL , can also render similar results . These peels result in ~ 3-4 days of peeling and can be done in combination with the Photofacials for a faster result. These are safe for all skin types and improve skin laxity, moderate lines and wrinkles , acne and sun-damage.

PRODUCTS INDICATED FOR SKIN REPAIR:
The principal of repairing skin, combines exfoliation of the epidermis (the outer surface of the skin) with stabilizing the melanocyte production ( the pigment responsible for skin color). Stabilizing the skin enables skin to renew and strengthen itself.

ONE FAVORITE PRODUCT LINE IS ZO SKIN HEALTH CARE — THE FOLLOWING WORKS TO PREPARE TO REPAIR

I’ve tried a couple treatments and you can see for yourself the subtle results.  Good skin doesn’t happen overnight with these lasers but you can see the sunspots and redness has been minimized quite a bit.  I like that this is a subtle treatment so that you can go about your day.  Some treatments did take a little bit longer to heal – the chest area can be very sensitive and she opted to go with more intensity the last treatment to get rid of the redness I had on my chest from years of sun damage.

My Journey:

I started my first Cutera xeo laser treatments started in August and I have noticed a change each month I get a treatment.  Here is what Lynne did based on my skin type and problem areas.  You can check out our Facebook Live Cutera Laser Demo here.

She used the xeo®  CUTERA’s completely customizable workhorse, with options to accommodate the preferred solutions for any practice. The Cutera xeo has more configuration possibilities than any multi-application platform on the market. It’s the ultimate aesthetic workstation offering options to technicians.  I like that Lynne will customize the treatments depending on what the client needs are what they hope to repair and fix.

About two hours after my first laser treatments. You can see why they call it the lunchtime laser treatments - you can go about your day!

She used the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) – CUTERA’s broad menu of intense pulsed light options provide a full range of treatments for the signs of aging. In addition to hair removal, xeo + IPL can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, dyschromia and provide deep dermal heating which stimulates collagen production.

There will be some redness after the laser treatments that tend to go away within a few days to a week depending on the intensity of treatment.
There will be some redness after the laser treatments that tend to go away within a few days to a week depending on the intensity of treatment.

My areas of concern were sun spots from my years of lifeguarding and red spots on my chest area.  With the Cutera xeo lasers she is able to adjust the intensity of the treatment.  She started on a lower intensity to see how my skin would react to a more intense one our last treatment to repair the redness on my chest area.  Otherwise known as the farmers tan, this area tends to be missed when putting on sunscreen.  I can really see results from this last treatment which helped with the redness and sun damage!

Let me know if you have any questions for me or Lynne!  We’d be happy to talk more about what you can expect with these laser treatments!

Over the months I was also using the ZO Skin Care products and I am really happy with the way it makes my skin look and feel.  Between the laser treatments and skin care products I do feel there is a subtle difference – one that resulted over time (this is not your Fraxel-type of treatment where you look like a burn victim for a week  – been there, done that) but one you need to give time so the collagen builds up to give you a more supple look and minimize fine lines.

I could TOTALLY use some tightening around my eyes!
Between the years of sun, aging, massive weight loss and hereditary condition which causes my eyes to droop to a point it is starting to affect my vision – especially when I am tired! I remember my dad having to have an “eye lift” for it!
Until the day I can afford intervention, I will do all I can with supplements, and serums!!!

Unfortunately ( and sometimes fortunately) , genetics does play a part in how our faces – including the eyes
(and neck, too) change with age . Some things of the “gravity drops” can be lifted non-surgically with lasers that provide skin tightening and Botox and fillers as well! Before surgery , consider consulting about how to improve your skin laxity !!

Hydrating from the inside out is key , no doubt! Your skin will be the first to give you away if you are depleted. As a rule , consider your daily water intake to be an ounce for every kilogram of body weight ( ie .. if you are 120#, you need 50-60 ounces /day)
For dry , crepey or puffy under-eyes, TEAMINE from Revision Skin Care provides a great anti-aging remedy!
