It’s A Girl! PBS Kids Daniel Tiger Welcomes A Baby Sister!
We love Daniel Tiger’s neighborhood because it teaches children about everyday life in a gentle and fun environment! On August 18th, PBS Kids is welcoming a new kid to the neighborhood with the arrival of Daniel Tiger’s new baby sister, Margaret. The season begins with a week full of new episodes that follow many of the important issues young children face with a new sibling.
We had a chance to interview Angela C. Santomero, creator of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, in our Inspirational Moms section last year where she talks about her inspiration behind creating such great hits like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Blue’s Clues. Below are helpful tips from Angela, who is also a parenting guru – and the mom of two daughters – to help your kids adjust to the arrival of a new baby brother or sister.
- Don’t Spill the Beans too Soon – While it’s always helpful to prepare your preschooler about what to expect and talk with them about new experiences, young children don’t understand time the way adults do. Since it can be difficult for them to wait for events happening many months in the future, try to wait as long as possible to tell your child about the new baby.
- Discuss What to Expect When You’re Expecting – Talk with your child about what to expect from newborns – they sleep a lot, cry, and can’t play games or talk (at least not the same way as your preschooler can)! If you know a family or friend with a new baby, make a brief visit so your child can see firsthand what an infant can and can’t yet do.
- Crown Your New “Big Helper” – Involve your child in caring for their new sibling right from the start. Encourage them to pick out items for the baby’s room, get the diapers when it’s changing time, and sing or talk to the baby. Giving them specific ways to lend a hand helps preschoolers feel needed and more grownup.
- Make “Mommy/Daddy & Me Time” – When the baby arrives, set aside “just you and me” times with your older child. Whether it’s a trip to the library or simply reading a story together before bed, it’s important to make sure your older child doesn’t feel left out.
- Let Them Know How Proud You Are – Help your child to feel proud about being the older brother or sister by showing your appreciation for all the things they can do that the new baby can’t yet accomplish such as using their words. Reinforce your older child’s role in the family as the big brother or sister to the new baby.
So make sure to tune in on August 18th to welcome Daniel Tiger’s new sister, Margaret! Plus we have some fun goodies to hand out in a giveaway to help celebrate the new addition that include: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Meet the New Baby DVD, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Welcome to the Neighborhood book, a Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Placemat and Stickers and Activity Sheets and Supplies plus some goodies like balloons and candies to enjoy while watching the show! Good luck!

I think our favorite episode is the crayon factory one. My daughter loves learning how things are made.
I have to disagree with the first point above, about waiting as long as possible. I actually used the possibility of a baby as a bedtime technique. I told her that if she wanted a little brother or sister she needed to go to bed quickly so mommy & daddy could have “mommy-daddy time”. She was just shy of 2 years old & it totally worked.
Then I had some physical limitations placed on me for the first trimester so I couldn’t pick her up anymore when I was standing. We explained that mommy was growing a baby and the doctor was concerned about a couple of things so I wasn’t allowed to pick her up. She adapted quickly to waiting for me to sit before commandeering my lap.

My fav episode is when Daniel tries to have a beach day inside because it’s raining and gets sand everywhere. I like how the show shows kids a good example in real-life situations. When my daughter gets mad we sing the “mad song” and she dances around and feels more calm. =)
