Perfect Valentine’s Day Gift :: DIY Clay Heart Dish

February is the month of love. Even though I don’t go over the top for Valentine’s Day,  I like to write little love notes and make cute easy crafts for the guys in my house so they feel extra special. I love to use clay for a lot of my projects and crafts and when I involve my son, 3D art is way more fun for him. Clay is also his favorite medium to play with.

Sculpey clay is so fun with all the wonderful colors you can pick from so you don’t even have to paint. And as a bonus it is pretty durable after you baked it in your own oven.

You  will need:

  • Sculpey Clay, I like this one here
  • a heart shape on a piece of paper and cut out (mine is approximately 4 inches)
  • toothpicks

You have to play and knee the clay between your fingers to get it soft and easy to work with.

Roll it in a big ball, the size will vary as your heart shape may be bigger or smaller than mine.

Flatten your ball out, be careful not to go to thin, a quarter of an inch is fine. You may use a rolling pin too. Make sure your heart fits perfectly on your clay.

Use the toothpick to cut out the clay.

Pick up your heart shape and start molding it in your hands to create a dish. Again be careful not to go to thin. You can use your fingers to smooth out lines where you fold it to create a dish.

I added legs to mine. Use another color and make one fat long ‘snake’. Use the toothpick to create 3 equal part and use your fingers to form your legs.

Attach them firmly but carefully to the bottom of your heart dish. Twist them a little as you attach them, so they stick better.

Now you are ready to decorate inside. I made little balls and flatten them and stacked together on mine.

Bake time: 275 F for 15- 20 minutes. Place the clay on the middle rack on a piece of aluminum foil , switch oven on and set timer for 15-20 min as soon as it reach temperature. You want to gradually heat the clay. Same with cooling down, leave inside oven after time is up and remove when it is cold.

Ready to serve coffee and chocolates to your favorite person.

Just a side note, this is not food safe, don’t serve food in them. More for decorating purposes.

Have fun creating heart dishes!
