Dandelion Moms Project Kindness :: August

Dandelion Moms Project Kindness:

The idea to start the dandelion moms project kindness came about after watching some of Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s videos entitled the Beckoning of Lovely Project and seeing the great things that were being done during the Random Acts of Kindness week.  I wanted to create a community of women and men who wanted to send out some seeds of kindness into the world by doing some easy acts of kindness.  Each month we spotlight an organization or person who is helping to make the world a better place to see how we might be able to help out.

Project Night Night:

This month I wanted to talk about Kendra Stitt Robins of Project Night Night.  She came up with the idea of Project Night Night after seeing how safe her son felt when traveling in new places if he had his favorite book, blanket and stuffed animal.  Thus the idea to create Project Night Night was born.  Kendra was an attorney in another life but wanted to do something in the nonprofit realm and she saw through her work as an attorney, the situations many families find themselves in when there is domestic abuse in the house and find themselves at a local shelter.

Project Night Night is run by a group of volunteers who send out tote bags filled with a new (or gently used) stuffed animal, an age-appropriate book, and a small blanket to children in shelters across the country.  A few years back, my daughter’s preschool classmates helped put together enough money to stuff 25 tote bags that were given out at our local shelter for women and children.  My friend, Florence of bla bla kids, provided the stuffed animals and local women’s groups hand sewed the blankets.  This was a wonderful activity for the children and we talked to them about how they are helping others (all in an age-appropriate manner).

We will be donating some Penelope the Purple Pirate and Gerry the Giraffe books to help stuff 10 tote bags.  Let’s see if we can’t get some more books, stuffed animals and/or donate a tote bag directly to help the children at these shelters across the country.  To read more about Katrina and her work go here where we featured Project Night Night: https://dandelionmoms.com/2012/12/project-night-night-helps-children-feel-valued-and-safe/

UPDATE:  GOOD NEWS!  PBS Kids will be donating 10 Daniel Tiger’s new plush dolls (see far left) in support of dandelion moms Project Kindness that will be used for the Project Night Night Tote bags! All of these cute toys from the Daniel Tiger’s series will be available this September at Toys R’Us!
