    Instagram of the Day :: Blueberry Pie Makes My Heart Sing

    September 7, 2013 /

      Tis the Season for Baking! Oh yes, I LOVE Blueberry pie to no end.  That first bite with just a hint of yummy whipped cream really does make my heart sing!  This past week I was craving a good homemade blueberry pie so I got all the necessary ingredients (did you know a big bag of blueberries is $9.99? – crazy!) at the store and set about making oatmeal raisin cookies for my husband (his favorite), added some Ghirardelli chocolate chips in some of the batch (for my daughter) and while those were in the oven making the whole house smell wonderful, I searched Google for my favorite blueberry pie recipe. …

    Fashion :: Dreaming of Fall

    September 6, 2013 /

        So…  I just read a post on facebook from my cousin who lives in Chicago. “61 degrees and having a pumpkin spice latte!”  “Whatever.” I wanted to write back.  Because back here is Southern California, we are experienceing a major heat wave with an unusual partner for a desert climate…humidity!  But the calendar says that fall is on its way and sweaters, jackets, boots and corduroy pants are filling up the stores. As I walk into the absolutely freezing but delicious air-conditioning in a store, I can feel an urge to buy a sweater come upon me despite the sweltering heat outside. I really think the retailers have the…

    Family :: One Mother’s Journey

    September 5, 2013 /

      September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, did you know that? What did I know about cancer in 1993? My grandma had breast cancer a few years earlier, but she was “old”. I adopted special-needs kids; surely my kids wouldn’t have to worry about something like cancer, right? Well, much to the chagrin of the pediatric neurologist who overlooked all the signs, my oldest son, Drew, developed brain cancer. Few people remember that Drew died at age 9 as a result of medulloblastoma, one of many brain cancers found almost exclusively in kids.   Suddenly I remembered a boy named Jimmy dying when we were in middle school. I remember…

    Helping Your Child Stay Safe While Home Alone

    September 5, 2013 /

      Kids have stayed home alone for decades. The term “latchkey” kids was created in the 1940s during World War II. Because of the absence of men due to the war, many women were forced to work outside the home for the first time, leaving kids to fend for themselves after school. During this period of time, a kid would often hang their house key from their neck for safe keeping, which led to the creation of the term “latchkey kids.” Today, many families are two-income households or single-parent families, meaning “latchkey kids” are just as prevalent today as in the 1940s, and it is a situation that often times…

    Dwell :: Glideware Helps Organize Your Kitchen

    September 4, 2013 /

      We live in a home in an area we absolutely love as the schools in our district are amazing and we are centrally located to some great shops, parks and pools.  But sometimes, I do get house envy when I go to my friends houses who live in another city who get more house for their buck.  I love mid-century ranch style homes and hope someday to purchase one when my daughter goes off to college.  In the meantime, I have to find ways to maximize my space in the house and the kitchen is one of my main challenges. Our house was built in the 1980’s and the way they designed the…
