    Education: Gershwin and Mission Read

    May 8, 2013 /

It’s hard to remember life without it…I, like many of you, am a part of a generation of students who grew up without the Internet – or even computers.  While in elementary school in New Jersey, our teachers and librarians taught us to use the Dewey Decimal system to locate books.  Remember those — the actual (paper index) cards with numbers and stamped dates!  One assignment in particular stands out – we had to read a biography of a person we found interesting and then write a book report.   My Lifetime Love Affair with George Gershwin: I went to a small elementary school and the set of biographies…

Confession :: Not a Fan of Flying

    May 5, 2013 /

Confession :: Not a Fan of Flying! Next week I will be flying out for the PBS Kids annual meeting in Miami, Florida as part of their PBS Kids VIP Ambassador Program.  Recently, they asked me if I would like to become a member of this group and as many of you know, I love PBS Kids!  Their programs are rich with great characters and quite educational such as Word Girl (love her sidekick monkey Captain Huggyface) and Wild Kratts: Creature Power. So off I go to Miami (minus a pink bikini – yes, I have an image of Miami in my head) to spend a few days with the folks who…

Some Fun Ideas to Encourage Healthy Eating

    May 4, 2013 /

When I came back from Japan years ago I had some major health issues that no one could seem to help me with.  I went to over ten doctors and usually came back home with a bag of prescription pills.  This was not how I wanted to live my life and start each day with a handful of pills!  Fortunately, I met a nutritionist at a Natural Products Expo, where the Japanese company I was working for was exhibiting (I sold medicinal mushrooms – but that is another story).  Turns out, after an hour consultation and analysis — he was was able to give me an explanation about what…

Culture :: Alex Gurney Talks Race Car Driving

    May 3, 2013 /

A few weeks ago I was speaking to one of the moms at my daughter’s school.  We were talking about an Instagram picture (see above) I took of a car I came across at a local golf course called the Shelby Cobra and I told her it was one of those cars you can see yourself driving along the cliffs with your scarf blowing in the wind.  Yes, I have an active imagination.  Her reply was “I don’t know if I told you, but my husband is a race-car driver.”  WHAT?! Was my reply – I mean how cool is that and definitely not something you hear every day!  That got me…

Giving Your Kids Your Rock Solid Support

    May 3, 2013 /

We love them beyond measure. That’s a given. And no one handed us a “how to” guide or technical manual when they were born. So we tap into that unconditional love and do the best we can to raise our children to be confident, well-adjusted, and self-reliant. We do what we do so they can one day go forth to live with passion and meaning. There are many factors that will contribute to our desired outcome for our children. And some of them, we won’t be able to control. What we can do, however, is build a strong foundation of support and a mom-child relationship that fosters and encourages…
