Disney’s Minnie and Daisy Magazine and Book Review & Giveaway

    April 29, 2013 /

History of Minnie Mouse and Daisy:   Minnie Mouse was  created by Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney. The comic strip story “The Gleam” (published January 19-May 2, 1942) by Merrill De Maris and Floyd Gottfredson first gave her full name as “Minerva Mouse.” Minnie has since been a recurring alias for her.  Both Minnie and Mickey were first drawn in 1928 by Ub Iwerks.  Before Iwerks moved on to Universal Studios he created Minnie as a companion to Mickey Mouse and designed Minnie to fit in with the style of the times which was more of a flapper style.  Over the years, we have seen a change in the original Minnie – who…

Encouraging Our Girls in Science and Math

    April 29, 2013 /

Many people I know had a an unfounded fear of math in school. My fear surrounding math was a factor when I changed my major in college from a Business Major to a Health Science Degree so I wouldn’t have to take the higher level math classes.  I don’t regret getting my degree in Health Science as I have just completed my Masters in Nutrition. But I do have to wonder if I had a supportive counselor or teacher encourage me – I might have been able to overcome my fear of math.   Stereotypes About Girls and STEM Careers: There are many stereotypes about girls and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math)…

Musings :: Humor is Good for the Soul

    April 28, 2013 /

Laughter is Good for the Soul! My husband and I met way back when in high school.  We were just friends all through high school, into college (he even came up for a sorority dance) and stayed in contact while I lived and worked in Japan.  One thing that has stayed constant is his ability to make me laugh.  Not just a polite laugh or giggle, but more along the lines of slapping my knees and maybe even an occasional snort gets thrown out there.  To this day, my mother, husband and daughter can all get me laughing like this – where it is a whole body…

Searching for Sea Glass on Prince Edward Island

    April 28, 2013 /

Located on Canada’s east coast, Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) boasts stunning beaches, pastoral landscapes with lush rolling hills, cozy towns, and exquisite seafood restaurants. Author Lucy Maud Montgomery put the Island on the proverbial world map when she made the Island the setting of her classic novel Anne of Green Gables.   Our Family Connection to the Island: My husband was born on the Island so we have done the P.E.I. road trip a few times now. This past summer, despite the worst vacation weather experienced to date, we managed to enjoy the Island and all it has to offer—without having to resort to the use of TV and video…

Crafts :: Create Memorable Mother’s Day Crafts

    April 27, 2013 /

Celebrate Mother’s Day with some home-made gifts: According to the National Retail Federation’s consumer spending survey conducted in April 2012, Americans spent about $18.6 billion nationally for Mother’s Day.  And the trend to spend more continues in spite of high gas prices and uncertainty around our economy.  Mother’s Day is just around the corner and I think most moms can attest that the best presents are those made by our kids.  For our kids, the process of creating something  and then seeing how excited we get over their arts and crafts is pretty special!  But don’t get me wrong – I am always a sucker for pretty flowers and…
