Celebrate Earth Day All Month Long With PBS Kids!
Beginning this month, PBS KIDS is springing into Earth Month with its annual Explore the Outdoors initiative, encouraging families to get outside and discover nature. Our family loves to take nature walks and we try to do this together a couple times a week. Sometimes we head to our local park with the dog (though he is not a good family walker – he gets too excited and does better on solo walks!) or the Back Bay while our daughter rides her bike. Our latest adventures include heading to the beach while my daughter searches for seashells while watching the sunset. Getting families outdoors is what Explore the Outdoors…

Reduce Stress and Reconnect with your Kids
Winter break was a welcome treat for me and my family. My kids and I needed it. Badly. Like many other parents, I spend most days doing schoolwork, shuttling kids around to activities, running errands and trying to keep up with the chores. When we started homeschooling last year, I thought we would be less pressed for time. That just isn’t the case. Before Winter break I found myself struggling to keep up. I was irritable and anxious. My kids were seeing a lot of “Grouchy Mommy”. Over the break I realized that I needed to back off of our schedule and take breaks for us to reconnect. We were…

A year ahead for the family is all about taking on new adventures. If 2015 is any indication, they could be good, bad or just plain hysterical. Our family has taken a few adventures that have definitely created some lifelong memories. We tend to take day-adventures and one of our favorites that we laugh about all the time is the day we brought our big German Shepherd mix to the dog beach in Huntington. He was so excited he could barely contain himself! In fact, he thought it was a good idea to eat all the sand he could find, run in the water after every dog he came across,…

8 Suggestions For Raising Eco-Friendly Children
That favorite expression of toddlerhood conjures up memories of fist pounding and shoe kicking tantrums. Whether you were in the grocery store aisle or in the sandbox at the local park, it is stressful and disheartening for parents to witness this self-centeredness. However, like most childhood stages, this eventually passes and leads to wonderful opportunities to raise eco-friendly children who are compassionate about others and the environment. By starting in our homes and working with our children, we can implement simple measures and begin instilling techniques to raise awareness about stewardship in relation to our planet. This helps our youth grasp the impact we have on our environment and,…

Exploring the Outdoors with Your Kids
Raising Happy and Healthy Kids: What is the best way to keep our kids happy and healthy? Take them outside. Now do not get me wrong, this is not going to be some post about how our kids should never play video games (my daughter loves Minecraft) but we should not live in a society where it is considered a punishment for your kid if you take away the electronic devices and make them go outside to play. Keep it Simple: A lot of times as parents we overthink things. What kind of craft should we do? What kind of game should we play? I need to set up…
