PBS Kids Promotes Reading All Year Long

The kids loved their goodies from PBS Kids!

As part of the PBS Kids VIP group I was provided some books and other materials to host a PBS Kids Summer Reading party.  My daughter and I are always up for a party and especially if it is one where we are encouraging young readers a love of books!  Here are some ideas we incorporated into our party that you can use to host your own book club or book reading party.  What a great way to encourage a love of reading in our kids.

Tips to Throw A Book-Reading Party:

Host the Party Outside:  If weather permits, why not host the book reading party outside?  We have been having really hot weather here in southern California but luckily on the day of the party it was comfortable outside.  If you are not able to have the party outside – why not set up a long table inside your home for the kids!

Make Sure to Have Snacks: We had the party after school and set up some fun snacks for the kids.  One of the moms brought green Rice Krispy treats which was a big hit with the kids and also some circus animal cookies.  But we offered some fruit as well to try to balance out the sweets.  A fed brain is a must at a book reading party (this includes the moms).

Set The Table:  You can get an inexpensive plastic tablecloth and set up your books around the table.  We put the activities and PBS Kids Reading Booklet inside as well.   We placed some balloons on the table because it isn’t really a party until we have balloons!  Depending on the activities you have planned (make sure to check the PBS Kids website for ideas) you might want to put some glue sticks, tape, crayons and colored pencils in the middle of the table.

Reading Time:  We had each child read a page from the book and took turns around the table.  It is okay to have them stop and ask questions if they want and discuss the pictures.  PBS SoCal had sent us some Martha Speaks books and there was a lot to talk about with them.  The story is quite funny!  I would suggest finding a book that will really engage the kids with some fun pictures.

Activities:  We were provided materials to make penny boats and the kids absolutely loved this activity!  It only takes some aluminum foil, tape and plastic straws.  Have each of them draw a picture of what they want their penny boat to look like.  Then give each child a piece or two of foil and have them create their boat to their hearts content.  The kids were really having fun with their designs.  The tape can be used to secure the straw and aluminum sail at the top.

Float Those Boats: We then headed over to our community pool which was right next to the park and had each child grab a handful of coins to put in their boats.  Lillian, one of the moms who helped organize the party, had a great idea and had the kids tell us how much their boats were worth after they grabbed a handful of coins out of a bucket. This way they are also practicing some basic counting.

Offer a Giveaway:  It is always fun to have a chance to win some goodies!  Alison and Lillian had each child write their name on a piece of paper and put it into a Dr. Seuss hat.  My daughter helped pull the names out and each child won a prize.  Another option is to have them answer questions from the story you just read and the first person who answers correctly wins that prize.

The kids had fun.  The moms had fun knowing their kids were practicing their reading skills and I must say, the penny boats were a hit!  Mix together reading, fun and activities and you will be sure to have a great party!

So now you are ready to host a book reading party!  We have some goodies to hand out in a giveaway which will include all the books we used at the party and other activities.  Enjoy!  And make sure to check out PBS Kids website for lots of summer and all-year long reading activities and downloads for the kids!  As well as videos and games featuring your favorite PBS Kids characters.   We are big fans of The Wild Kratt’s and love all the adventuring ideas and activities they offer on the site.
