5 Ways To Keep Kids Busy This Summer
We all look forward to summer vacation. For a little while we are free from loading backpacks, rushing out to beat the school bell, and homework. And as much fun as we know we’re going to have, we all know our children will tell us at least once how bored they are.
I know I’ll hear it – I often do. But I have started preparing myself for those occasions and keep things on my bookshelf that I can pass off to the kids when they can’t find something fun on their own. I’m well stocked with Usborne sticker books, wipe-clean flash cards, and learn-to-draw books.
Here are a few of my favorite things to keep on hand to inspire the kids to get creative and banish boredom.
Sticker Books:
There are so many fun Usborne sticker books. ABC sticker books for early learners, “Build a Picture” sticker books for kids to create their own scenes, “1001 Things to Spot” sticker books, and themed sticker books from cavemen to outer space, all developed with expert consultants to ensure that the content and stickers are historically accurate. When I give my kids one of these, I’m guaranteed some quiet time.
Wipe-Clean Activity Books and Flash Cards
My first Usborne purchase was two wipe-clean books. I purchased them nearly three years ago when my son was learning to read and write and we still use them today. My 3-year-old daughter uses them at least once a week, and they are still in good condition. After years of dry erase marker scribbles and Windex baths they still entertain. We have a set of wipe-clean flash cards now and those also have been a hit in my house. There are 50 two-sided cards with puzzles, doodle opportunities, and mazes. I like to grab a few and throw them in our bag with a dry erase marker to keep the kids busy when we are on the go.
Learn-To-Draw Books
We had drawing books on our shelves before I got the Usborne drawing books, but they got limited use. When we got the Usborne Step-By-Step drawing book, it was like a whole new world of opportunity opened up for them. The illustrations for each step are easy to understand and simple to recreate. My three year-old was able to draw a princess all by herself and she was so proud of her results. They go back to the step-by-step drawing books over and over again.
Things to Make and Do Craft Books
Usborne craft books have so many fun ideas. From fairy wings to warty toads, you’ll find hours of inspiration in these books, most with stickers to enhance your creations. There’s even a science-themed book for fun and easy science experiments. You can choose from general craft activities in the book Things for Kids to Make and Do, or pick one of the many themed books like cowboys, wizards, or mermaids.
Activity Pads
I remember spending a lot of my time doing mazes and crosswords and Mad Libs and other puzzles when I was young. So it’s no surprise that my kids also enjoy opening an activity pad and getting to work. The doodle pads come with pages of things to decorate and create. You’ll find mermaids, space aliens, sea creatures, patterns to recreate, pictures to color, and puzzles to solve. What I love most about the doodle pads, dot-to-dot-books, and maze books is that each page has several things to do. While a page shows a dot-to-dot to complete, for example, the rest of the page is filled with things to spot, and details to add so little hands have plenty to keep them busy.
In January, I was looking to purchase some new material from Usborne Books to use as homeschool material. I had other books from a previous purchase and I loved their quality and material. When I looked into making my purchase it made so much sense to sign up as a seller. Not only did I get a ton of books for $119, but I also have access to the amazing library of books that Usborne Books has to offer. So now, as an Independent Consultant, I am able to keep my shelves stocked with fun titles for my kids to use and explore.
Because I love the books so much, and I know your kids will love them too, I am offering a Summer Boredom Buster Giveaway! The four-pack of books includes the Awesome Doodle Pad, Optical Illusions Activity Book, What Shall I draw?, and a set of Brain Puzzles flash cards.

My oldest reads everything she can get her hands on. My middle is just learning to read. We have been working on short books and lots of sight words. So there will be lots of fun with reading over the summer. Our library does a summer contest too that is fun and keeps the kids excited.

Yes, just about every day!

Yes. I’m trying to get my three boys more into reading. We take an hour each day to do some reading. Either we take turns reading out of a story book or we each read our own books for some quiet family time.
