8 Must-Have Homework Helpers for Students

Our students are challenged today with plenty of homework. As parents we like to think we have all the answers. But the truth is, sometimes we don’t. So when it comes time to study it’s nice to have a few reference books on hand that are easy to read and navigate while still offering a ton of information. Here is a list of some of my favorite reference books for students:

  1. The Illustrated Dictionary – The perfect dictionary for ages 6 and up with 288 pages and over 1000 illustrations. The Illustrated Dictionary features a user’s guide, parts of speech and their roles in forming sentences, hints and guidelines for writing and spelling, and a brief history of the English language. Although not noted in the book, you can access additional material through the Usborne Quicklinks website. Companion material for the dictionary includes spelling practice, English grammar, writing practice, quizzes, and activities just for fun.

  1. Children’s Encyclopedia – The Children’s Encyclopedia has 320 pages with over 1,500 images. Packed with information and suggestions for hands on activities and experiments plus downloadable images, quizzes and activity pages. The encyclopedia features the world maps and flags with facts and records. This internet-linked book contains over 150 QR codes and over 600 hand-picked internet links for additional exploration.   1. The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History – The World History Encyclopedia features 416 pages of history from prehistoric times to the 21st century. You’ll find a 12,000 year illustrated timeline, over 100 maps, and plenty of amazing facts and illustrations. This internet-linked book includes access to the Usborne Quicklinks page with additional links to hand-picked websites featuring information and activities related to in-text topics. Take a virtual tour of a dinosaur museum or watch a video about Ancient Egypt. With quicklinks, you can explore history beyond the pages of the book.

  1. The Usborne Science Encyclopedia – This internet-linked science encyclopedia offers 448 pages of science with over 140 experiments, activities and observations. There are brilliant images throughout the book with information on everything from atoms to energy to plant life. Quizzes for each section can be found in the back of the book.   1. Illustrated Elementary Math Dictionary – Never question your math skills again. This illustrated math dictionary explains mathematical operations in illustrated, easy to follow formats. If your student has trouble with math, this is an exceptional tool that will help your student gain a better understanding of math. A must have for elementary students everywhere. Also access tons of websites and printable activities through the Quicklinks page. There are two additional illustrated math dictionaries available as well. One suitable for pre-k to 2nd grade, and one that is appropriate for grades 6 and up.
