Programming and Science Projects that Promote Learning

Have your kids started school back up this week or last week?  Did you have tears of sadness or a little bit of joy that you have some free time on your hands?  I think I had a little of both.  I enjoy the summer break with my daughter and love to head off to the beach or movies any time during the week.  But as I work out of the home, finding a balance can be quite challenging.

As parents, we do our best to prevent too much of a summer slide – the loss of certain skills in math and reading that can happen over the summer, but there is still time to have our kids catch up to refresh their growing brains. A little help from some awesome Netflix TV shows and movies can help to ease them back into the education mindset while disguised as fun.  Here are some shows you can incorporate into your downtime while they recover from their first weeks back to school.  We even have a fun MC2 giveaway going on so be sure to enter!

Older Kids:

For older kids, put a fun spin on the stuff they’re dreading — math homework, spelling tests, science reports — the brand new Project Mc² Netflix Original Series, which premiered on Aug. 7 proves smart is the hottest BTS trend. The show features four supercool teen spies who show how girls can use their science smarts and math problem-solving skills to save the world. Total #SmartGirl inspo! My nine year old absolutely loves this show.  And I like that it shows girls who enjoy science while solving problems to help save the world.  Below you will find a couple science projects you can do at home with items you probably already have in the home.  Enjoy!

And the offspring of favorite fairytale characters in Ever After High’s new Way Too Wonderland adventure (debuted Aug. 14) empower kids to write their own life stories. Whether Royal or Rebel, your actions, behaviors and choices are your own to make.

Have fun with DINOTRUX!

Get the little ones ready for new experiences with shows like the Netflix original Dinotrux from DreamWorks, which premiered Aug. 14 — prehistoric hybrid dinosaur-construction vehicles team-up to use their different skills to solve problems and show that even the most uncommon of duos, like Ty-Rux and Revvit, can form friendships of a lifetime.  You can check the review one of our dandelion moms, Debbie and her two sons gave this fun new series.

Reading Rainbow:

They can also go anywhere and be anything by letting their imaginations soar on a Reading Rainbow journey, now available to stream.  We love Reading Rainbow!  Such a wonderful way to encourage a love of reading and writing.

DIY Science Projects:

Make Your Own Green Penny

You Need:

Penny

Paper Towel

Vinegar

Ultimate Lab Kit Petri Dish (could be picked up at any craft store)

Fold a small paper towel a few times so that it fits in the bottom of the petri dish. Pour some vinegar so that the paper towel is soaked.  Put the penny on the paper towel and cover with the petri dish lid.

Take a look at the penny every few hours and see what happens. Keep the penny in the dish for one day for best results.  For more fun projects to do this school year head over to www.projectmc2.com.

Make Your Own Morphing Straw

You Need:

Cooking Oil

Drinking Straw

Ultimate Lab Kit Jar (can be found at most craft stores)

Fill the jar 1/2 full with oil.  Put the straw in the jar until it reaches the bottom and push it to one side of the jar.

Bring the jar to eye level.  Look at the straw as you turn the jar slowly and see what happens to the straw’s appearance.  How does it change? Can you even make part of it disappear?
