Dawn of the Croods: Now on Netflix

Our Winter break was busy. Full of family activities and finishing up last minute shopping. And of course we all got sick. We took advantage of our sick days by staying in our pajamas and watching television. Fortunately for us, Netflix released Dawn of the Croods, a new animated cartoon series by DreamWorks Animation, on Christmas Eve.

Dawn of the Croods serves as a prequel  animated series based on DreamWorks’ previously released animated full length feature The Croods. The animated series features the Crood family living their caveman lifestyle among friends and neighbors in Aaah! Valley. They juggle family dynamics with caveman era problems and humor lies at the heart of every situation. From prank wars to making new friends to trying new foods, there are themes in Dawn of the Croods that we can all relate to.

While the animation is different – Dawn of the Croods is hand-drawn animation, and the feature film is CGI – the characters remain true to their original personalities. Eep is always a bit rebellious and stepping outside of Grug’s comfort zone, Sandy is fast and frisky, and Gran is a spitfire!

My kids loved the movie, and were really excited about Dawn of the Croods. They laugh out loud at the Croods’ silly circumstances and we all enjoy the spirit of the show. Right before Christmas we received the Dawn of the Croods Holiday Activity set promoting the show’s release and we used the finger paints inside to do some cave painting of our own. We hung the Croods bone ornament on the tree along with the stocking and spent the day after Christmas soaking up new episodes on Netflix. We were a little sad though that they took the movie off of Netflix. Even though we’ve watched it several times, watching the series gave us the itch to watch the movie again but, alas, it is no longer available.

As I mentioned before, Dawn of the Croods is a prequel to the feature movie, so if you’ve seen the movie, you might remember that they were the last surviving family. Dawn of the Croods shows what life might have been like in their neighborhood before the catastrophic event that left them alone. Dawn of the Croods is also good preparation for the sequel to the animated feature that will be released by DreamWorks in 2017. We can’t wait!

We accepted the Dawn of the Croods Holiday Activity Set from DreamWorks in Connection with my review, but my opinions are my own and we really do love the Croods!
