Whole Foods and PBS Kids Promote Healthy Eating
After my health scare this past year, I was reminded of how important it is to be in good health. It really is the foundation to living a full and vibrant life! Especially if you have young children, you want to teach them the importance of making good food choices to ensure they grow up appreciating and taking care of their own health. So I was happy to hear that Whole Foods Market and PBS Kids have partnered up to offer families tools that support healthy eating. They offer FREE resources, including materials from their newest preschool series, PEG + CAT, which focuses on preschool math and problem-solving skills and will air on Monday, October 7th (make sure to check your local listings). PEG + CAT activities, recipes and more will be available to families at your local Whole Foods Market throughout September and offers fun ways to build math skills and healthy eating habits. PBS KIDS is also offering recipes, tips, activities and games to encourage a lifetime of healthy eating online at https://pbskids.org/healthykids. This delicious (and kid-friendly) Whole Wheat Banana Nut Pancake Recipe is just one of many they offer on their site – yum!
The Importance of Promoting Healthy Eating:
“At PBS KIDS, our goal is to offer educational, engaging content for the whole child, helping prepare kids for success in school and in life,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Programming, PBS. “Healthy eating is an important part of this whole child philosophy, which is why we are excited to provide resources from PEG + CAT to help make grocery shopping, cooking and eating a learning adventure through our work with Whole Foods Market.”
PBS KIDS has launched a website with resources for families to encourage healthy eating and build academic skills. Located at pbskids.org/healthykids, the site features online and offline activities to help kids and parents have fun building math and science skills as they grocery shop, cook and eat. The site also features healthy eating tips to help children establish a lifetime of good nutrition and easy, affordable recipes from PBS Parents Kitchen Explorers designed to encourage kids to try new foods. They offer several colorful PEG + CAT sheets you can download and use such as the Our Healthy Week where your child can draw or write in the list of healthy foods the family ate together as well a Simple Meal Time Solutions weekly calendar that allows you to write down what your plan to make each week. I think by involving kids in the process of grocery shopping, choosing healthy meals and even helping cook some of the meals, allows them the opportunity to start thinking of healthy foods and why it is important to think about what they are putting into their growing bodies.
Whole Foods Market is also offering online tools featuring kid-friendly recipes to help families eat better, quick and healthy meal-planning tips for families, resources for healthy eating on a budget, and nutrition information for all ages. These tools are now available at www.wholefoodsmarket.com/kid-friendly. I love how they are offering kid-friendly recipes as I know my daughter is a pretty picky eater. Well, I take that back – if it has sugar in it – she is good to go. But I prefer to slowly educate her about good food choices and think it is fantastic PBS Kids and Whole Foods are collaborating to help parents teach their children about healthy – and tasty foods. So make sure to check out your local Whole Foods Market for the rest of September as they have in-store materials throughout the rest of September. To learn more, visit pbskids.org/healthykids.
Loads of Fun Activities:
Some of the activities and recipes include the Pirates “Great Banana” Fruit Salad Recipe is just too fun! You probably know by now how much I love anything to do with pirates. You can download the pdf here that includes a delicious recipe of bananas, grapes, peaches, blueberries that you cut up and place inside the treasure chest they show you how to make. I just love this idea of creating a fun activity centered around healthy food!
Ahoy! Have fun with yer mates and to learn more, visit pbskids.org/healthykids.
