3 Ways To Entertain Your Kids This Weekend
Much of the country is cold and covered with snow right now, but here in Southern California, we’re blessed with plenty of sunshine. Thanks to beautiful weather and a location that provides endless possibilities, there are oceans of adventures to embark on. Wherever you are, here are a few ways you can entertain your kids this weekend.
Take the train – Or the Metro.
Los Angeles has a growing number of Metro Rail trains that transport riders around the city and surrounding areas. Take the Metro Red or Purple rail lines to the Pershing Square Station and walk to the Angels Flight Railway at 351 South Hill Street. For .50¢ you can take the shortest train ride in the world (a whopping 298 feet) on the 1901 funicular that transports riders up and down the steep incline between Olive and Hill Streets. Next, explore Pershing Square, a popular park and concert and event venue. Don’t miss the outdoor art gallery here. Once you’ve worked up an appetite head to Grand Central Market, a historic landmark that has been in operation since 1917 that offers a variety of dining options, retail shopping, and an arcade. Not in Los Angeles? Check out your cities public transportation options and routes and find a nearby destination or historic landmark to explore.
Go hunting – Scavenger hunting that is.
Southern California (and most cities around the country) offers a wealth of wildlife preserves, nature centers, and hiking trails to explore. Pick your favorite kid-friendly spot, or try a new one, and make a list of things that kids will be able to find along the trails. For pre-readers you can use a picture list and draw your own pictures or have them help you cut pictures out of a magazine. Whittier Narrows Nature Center, Eaton Canyon Park & Nature Center, and Placerita Canyon Nature Center are a few destinations near Los Angeles that the whole family will enjoy. Not in Los Angeles? Check with your local parks department to find a fun destination near you or visit www.fws.gov/refuges for a list of National Wildlife refuges and www.nps.gov for a list of National Parks.

Get your game on:
In the spirit of the Olympics, why not try out a new sport as a family? Ice skating, ice hockey, and snowboarding are all popular winter sports but if you’re looking for something that requires less equipment stick to something simple like handball, volleyball, or even judo. Many community centers have game rooms with table tennis courts, billiards tables, and basketball courts and provide free access to the equipment. Playing games is also an excellent way to teach and encourage good sportsmanship and how to be a team player, not to mention that it’s a great family bonding activity.
Whatever the weather where you live, enjoy your weekend by carving out some quality family time.
